| More potty pad questions I'm the one trying to use a combination of outside and pads. Here's an update--please advise! Now that I'm back to teaching, I haul my #$$ out of bed at 5 am and immediately take Scarlett outside where she obediently tinkles. I then feed her. My husband or I let her out sometime between 5:30 and 6:00. Sometimes she poops; sometimes she doesn't. Sometimes we don't find it until later. Sometime between 11:30 and 1, her dogwalker comes and plays with her or walks her. She tinkles outside and again, sometimes she poops; sometimes she doesn't. I had originally wanted to train her to go outside 100%, but since I've gone back to work, I leave a potty pad out where she is penned in--my kitchen/breakfast nook area. Yesterday she shredded it. Today I left a fabric one out; it remained untouched and she tinkled on the floor in the kitchen while I was at work. I bought some more of those "pheromone" treated paper pads, put one down tonight, and she tried to eat it. I definitely cannot rely on any kind of 20 minute after she eats rule for pooping. In fact, she doesn't seem to be much of a night time pooper. She will be 6 months old Sept. 12, and she weighs 6 pounds and 4 ozs. I understand that she is in the midst of adolescence, so maybe that has something to do with it, but she is so darn smart in every other way! Advice? |

| You can buy the Pheromone spray and put a bit on the cloth pad. Also when you come home really, really keep on her and the minute she does poop on the pad go crazy happy and treat....do this for a couple days....

| Can one buy the Pheromone spray at most pet stores? I wondered how I was going to get her to use the cloth pad. |

| I used the spray from natures miracle, it worked for a couple days on the outside of his playpen pad, then he started ignoring it again. I also had the problem of gizmo tearing up the pads ad eating parts of them. What I started doing was buying the pad holders so its harder for them to pull up, and he has not torn one up. Since :-) were still working on getting him to use the pad outside his playpen, I started rubbing a bit of his own urine on the new pad before putting it in the holder, and it seems to be working slowly, as he has went potty on the one outside his playpen a couple times so far. He goes perfectly in his playpen on the pad in there and never has an accident there. Since my playpen is quite large ad has a door, I'm thinking later I will start leaving the door open, to see if he will go in there since he likes that one so much, and the outside playpen not so much haha. Overall I think he's doing really well for 11 weeks :-) he's only had one accident in the 3 weeks I've had him, so I think that's pretty good. You might want to try getting the pad holder and the spray, although as the previous op stated it stinks really bad. I also got another spray from natures miracle I think it's called mark no more, and I plan to spray all my carpet this weekend, hoping he won't like that smell, and maybe then his outside of the playpen pad will smell much more inviting to him :-) |

| Oh and I never ever reprimand him for any negative behavior, I completely ignore it. I do however praise him very excitedly, give him a treat and act like he's just done the most amazing thing every time he does a good behavior. He's gotten to where after he gets such praise, he hurries back to his pad to try to go again, so he can get another treat haha, of course he can never go again right away, but it doesn't deter him from trying lol. I go to home goods and they have really great treats there. The ones he likes the best are the dehydrated salmon. I just tear off a very tiny piece so he doesn't get too much :-) |

She hasn't had a mistake in at least a week. She also tries peeing more often though; I am pretty sure she has learned to hold her pee and pee more frequently to get more treats--in other words, she is now gaming the system... This is my approach: ---Hartz potty pads from Costco ---I always leave a big square out made from 4 pads in the corner of the living room. I also leave big square out of 4 of them in my bathroom (her "room") ---When I'm home, I sit in the living room and keep her within my view ---Peepee mistake: 1) immediately show her the mistake spot & say "NO potty" (if I don't catch it within 30 seconds, I don't say anything) 2) carry her to the potty pads, place her down, pet her head and say "potty HERE" 3) clean up right away with Natures Miracle ---Poopoo mistake: I just scoop her up and put her on the potty pad over and over until she gives up and decides to just poopoo there [admittedly, I would hate if someone picked me up and carried me away over and over every time I tried to do my business lol] ---Peepee on potty pad: 1) immediately give her a treat (usually a Bil Jac "Little Jac" treat) and excitedly say "good potty!" a few times 2) replace with a fresh pad Good luck with your furry one! | |

| Thanks for all the suggestions. Going to get the pad holder and spray this weekend. My challenge is that during the day, I'm not home-at work. So I can only work on this in the evenings and weekends. If I could only get my husband to let her be crated from 7 to noon when walker comes, that would probably do the trick. He just can't wrap his head around the crate thing. |
