This worked/is working for me too. I tried crate training first, but had 2 instances where she peed in her (appropriately sized) crate after only a couple hours, so I am pausing crate training. I assembled my current approach from a bunch of tips on YT.
She hasn't had a mistake in at least a week. She also tries peeing more often though; I am pretty sure she has learned to hold her pee and pee more frequently to get more treats--in other words, she is now gaming the system...
This is my approach:
---
Hartz potty pads from Costco
---I always leave a big square out made from
4 pads in the corner of the
living room. I also leave big square out of 4 of them in my bathroom (
her "room")
---When I'm home, I sit in the living room and keep her within my view
---
Peepee mistake: 1) immediately show her the mistake spot & say "NO potty" (if I don't catch it within 30 seconds, I don't say anything) 2) carry her to the potty pads, place her down, pet her head and say "potty HERE" 3) clean up right away with Natures Miracle
---
Poopoo mistake: I just scoop her up and put her on the potty pad over and over until she gives up and decides to just poopoo there [admittedly, I would hate if someone picked me up and carried me away over and over every time I tried to do my business lol]
---
Peepee on potty pad: 1) immediately give her a treat (usually a Bil Jac "Little Jac" treat) and excitedly say "good potty!" a few times 2) replace with a fresh pad
Good luck with your furry one!
