| Some potty training advice needed for 4.5 month yorkie boy We have a yorkie male puppy that is 4.5 (18 months) old. We have a play pan that has a bed, food, and a wee wee pad. When the yorkie is in the play pan, he always urinates on the pad. In the living room we have a wee wee pad set up in the corner (always has been in this location). When we let him out of the playpan, he will urinate on the pad in the living room 60% of the time and the other 40% he will urinate on the wood floor somewhere in the living room. It seems, that the older he gets the more he will either not urinate on the pad but on the floor. We usually watch him and when we see him sniffing around we place him on the wee wee pad. Sometimes he urinates there (we praise him) and sometimes he will walk off, and in 5 minutes urinate on the floor somewhere. When he urinates on the floor, I say "NO" and today I started to lock him in a crate for 5 minutes. He will get neutered at 6 months, perhaps this will help? Anyway, what else can we do, is it normal for him to sometimes urinate on the floor? Are we doing something wrong? Please help FYI: When he poops, he goes on the pad about 95% of the time. |

| I'm a little confused , because you state that he's 4.5 months then list 18 months in parentheses. I'm going to take a wild stab that he's 4.5 months old (based on the neuter when he's 6 months comment). He's still very much an infant and will get better with age. Congrats on the peeing 60% in the correct location and 95% poop success! Patience and limiting access when your not actively watching. Good luck

| What goes through these little guys' heads? My little one (7#) is 100% reliable when traveling in a hotel. My big guy (10#) is also 100% relaible, only he goes outside. At home? Well... when it's 'convenient', the little guy hits about 75% and my big guy is 100%... unless it's raining, or snowing, or windy, or cold, or he just doesn't feel like it... Persistence is the key, and consistency. When I get lazy, they get lazy. Got to clean up any accidents 100% with enzyme cleaner AND spray with Pee Block solution. It's like a full time job... unless I could live in a hotel. |

| Yorkie is now 20.5 weeks old, he is now fully potty trained INSIDE the house. In the last 5 days he has not urinated/pooped or marked his territory anywhere else than the wee wee pads. We have 2 pads, one in the corner and one in his play pan. Also, when taken to friends houses we bring 1 pad, he goes on the pad. Every time we saw him urinate on the pad, he got a treat, this seemed to do the trick. He is still shy about urinating outside (he thinks its wrong). I don't want to confuse him too much but it would be ideal if he would urinate outside and also on the wee wee pads. |

| You are using his crate as a punishment instead of letting it be his "safe place" and there really isn't a correlation between his potty accident on the floor and his "time out" in his crate. I don't think that THAT part is going to be much help. What I would do, if I caught him having an "accident" I would tell him NO! then place him on the pad and say, POTTY! Then if he pottied on the pad praise him like crazy and even give him a treat.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I take Julie out about every 1.5 to 2.5 hours. When it comes to housebreaking, I give her liver treats (cut small) as the reward. When I "catch her in the act" I pick her up saying "outside" and promptly pick her up and take her to her potty spot outside. If I don't catch her in the act, I keep silent and wipe the mess up. My Mom is shocked and amazed that Julie likes going into her crate. I've told her I've never made it a place of punishment. I make it as inviting as I can, plus that is the one I use for traveling. Is she 100% housebroken? No. The responses that I've seen posted to you make me realize I am really having success with her and not to flog myself so much. In the two months she's been in my home, this was the first day for no accidents. Hope this helps. Starlette QUESTION: Since both yorkie and shih tzu are small breeds, how long can they hold their urine and how often do you take them out to get busy before you consider them "housebroken". With Sabu, he has free reign of the house. He can hold his urine all day if need be. For the smaller breed, this is all new to me. Thanks. |

| How to differentiate I know alot of people say to watch your dog like a hawk when he's out and about around the house so you can get used to his behaviors if he needs to go to the bathroom but honestly I can't seem to differentiate between him sitting down or if he pees (they look exactly the same! lol) The only time I can catch him before he goes to the bathroom is if he poos b/c its an obvious sign to me when he is circling around and assumes the position lol How can you tell if he's actually peeing or sitting other than the yellow puddle after he does it? |
