| I don't think I've ever done the alph roll at least not correctly. I did try the grabbing the scruff of the neck and growling "no" this did seem to get his attention when he was around the 3 month age. logan went through a stage of jumping up and trying to bite you in the face. I'm sure it was just because he was excited but I couldn't have him doing it because it hurt. So I would just get a hold of him under the arms and hold him so he couldn't squirm away or bite me again and say no and then I would hold him til he settled and then I would tell him to kiss nice and he would and then I would praise him. Now if he gets to rough I just have to say be nice or sometimes I'll yelp ouch and that usually makes him stop, but this is after a couple months of the hold and no command. I got my Logan at 7 weeks so I've kinda had to be his mom in the way of teaching him what's okay behavior and what's not. Just be consistent and if he does something good even if it's just for a little bit praise him and give him a treat he'll soon learn.

| Thanks, Cindy, for posting these 2 articles! Personally, I think we should have a thread dedicated to this topic because it is so misunderstood. The problem with the alpha roll is that it rarely works (yes, it works sometimes - so does beating them, but we don't advocate that either). Unfortunately, it quite often makes the problem worse. From the second article, Cindy posted: Quote:

| I understand exactly how you feel. None of wants a little guy that bites hard and hurts us. I just posted a tip on spraying a dog's mouth with Binaca mouth spray to help stop it from barking. And, this did work wonderfully for one woman. Perhaps you could try this or spray him in the mouth with some else that is harmless (but that he hates!!!) whenever he bites. The thing you have to do is make his biting you every bit as unpleasant for him as it is for you. There are many things that are harmless - but taste just terrible. I'm sure you can come up with something. And -- the more he hates it - the faster it may work! I would go the whole nine yards with him - show him no mercy (ha ha) - because he's just not going to have any friends if he continues to bit and hurt people. I wish you the very best of luck!!!!! | Looking back over this thread, I'm disappointed in my response. I got caught up in the alpha-roll thing and forgot my own advice: teach an alternate behavior. No C/T for me! D4nimal - you may not still be keeping up with this thread, but if you are, it seems to me that Yoshi has 2 problem areas. Both of these are correctable. The first is object guarding. Here is a link to a good description of how best to help Yoshi get over this: http://www.clickersolutions.com/arti...ctguarding.htm The second is intolerance to having things done to his paws. Here's an article on that: http://www.clickersolutions.com/arti...iltrimming.htm Good Luck! |
