Yorkie Talker | Help! Ok, so I live on a 15 acre farm. Half mile long driveway, of course I have my large outside dogs, and my first ever beloved male yorkie is my inside baby. He turned a year old in Novemeber, he is my EVERYTHING. So, here is my problem. I hate the idea of making a dog stay tied up or in a kennel, call me a feel goodist but i dont believe in it. We do havbe a fenced in yard, but my baby is small of course. so, when I let him out, I find he is ALWAYS running off to the neighbors house which is located in front of us. They have a female lab, but she is fixed. When I try to make him go potty on leash he wont, and thus potties in the house. If I let him outside, and go with him, not on a leash he will potty, but then run to the female and not listen when I call him. What can I do to teach him to not run off? Underground fence? shock collar? I dont want to resort to that. Should I get a female as a friend for him, would that keep him in the yard? of course I would get her fixed, dont want to be breeding. Who can help? |

YT 2000 Club Member | Sounds like he just wants to play! Please don't use a shock collar or shock fence as I think that is cruel! Besides it could really injure a yorkie, since they are pretty small! If is a safety issue, you will probably have to walk him on a leash or confine him to a fenced in yard. I hope this helps a little. I too live on an acreage with my parents being just across the field. I don't have any problems with my dogs going there to visit. Maybe a playmate would help.....

Yorkie Talker | Thank you Deb! My neighbor has no problems with little Milo coming to visit, I just about have a heart attack every time he runs up there because before I got him I had a mini schnauzer that I had for 6 years, moved to the country to my husbands farm, and one day i let her out to potty and she never came back. we looked everywhere. We have a VERY large hawk that lived in and around our barn, as well as some large owls, I think these predators ate my dog, and a bouncy little yorkie may look like a rabbit! lol. If i lost him I dont know what i would do, So i thought about getting a female yorkie this spring as a playmate for him, and so maybe he would stay close. We have a lab, but he is a hunter, and often isnt around for milo to play with! thanks for the help though, i also dislike shock collars, just didnt know what i should do! |

| I don't have a fence and so Huey can't go outside off leash because he immediately runs off. (2 experiments with this several years ago taught us our lesson). What you say about a companion might work, though, because when I take Huey to my parents house where the yard is fenced but with wrought iron and gaps large enough for Huey to get through, he has never tried. He is content to stay in their yard and play with their 2 dogs.

| When we go to the country to visit I take Cali's x-pen and put it in the yard for her because she gets so excited she takes off for the hills. I even have two of them that I hook together with those tie-strap thingies.

Yorkie Talker | awesome Thanks so much for the feedback. I always thought he just ran and wouldnt listen because of something I did wrong. I know he just wants to play, but I'm not willing to risk him being scooped up as lunch. My next question is what is an X pen and WHERE CAN I GET ONE!! |

| Can't you put him on a long long leash like one of those 26 feet ones to go potty outside? You could even link 2 together and he can be quite far away from you and still potty in near private.

Yorkie Talker | I suppose I very well could do that. I have the extractable leash, not sure how far it goes, maybe ten feet. He is a little prissy with his "pooping", he likes to hide! Was always wondering if anyone else's yorkies like to get crazy and take off running outside. I did alot of reading about Yorkie's and realize they love to have some adventure and are very curious, and were originally bred to chase small varmits, and Milo does love all of that, but I just feel its too dangerous, but also hate to restrict him to where he doesnt have much of a chance to run run run!! |

| Well, my x-pens are metal, but I have seen some that are plastic. I got the metal because is collapsed the flattest. It has sections about 2 feet wide by about 2 feet high that can be put up in any number of shapes. I think I got mine at Petsmart or someplace like that. I like it because when I travel I can flatten it and put it under the suitcases or anything else I am packing in the car. I have even checked it on the plane and put it in one of those boxes they have available.

You said you live in a rural area so you probably know about those hawk things! Be sure to have lots of respect for them with your little Yorkie!

| This is what I have. I actually used it unfolded indoors after I got Huey to block access to certain areas of the house where he wanted to mark, like a really big baby gate. Precision Pet Exercise Pen with Door - 24" - Gates & Exercise Pens - Dog - PetSmart
