Yorkie Yakker | Crate Training & D0-claws My boy Sammy is will be a year on Oct 17th. I have been crate training him since I got him in Dec. He is very good in the crate and out of it. I am wondering how long I should crate train him before leaving him out of it while I am out of the house and at nite so he can sleep in his bed. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also does any one know if a Yorkie should have their do-claws removed (if they have them). He is going into surgery soon to have his remaining baby teeth extracted and I thought I should do both at the same time. Thanks in advance |

| If he is not having accidents or chewing up things I would start off by leaving him free in one room that you have puppy proofed and see how that goes. As a puppy Callie hated her crate so as soon as she was potty trained and my room was puppy proofed she graduated to a big dog bed. If the dew claws are not causing any problems I don't think I would remove them. Callie had ripped one of hers off and exposed the vein and nerve and had to be sedated to have it cut back so I am really thinking of whether I should remove them whenever the next time she goes under is. I go back and forth with it.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Each pup is different, you may want to start by leaving him out on short trips out and than lengthen them to see how he handles it. Than have a few sleep overs out of his cage at night and see how he handles it. If he fall back into behavior you dont like than use the cage again. Wait a few more weeks and try it again. Once you are certain that he can stay out of trouble and not go potty on the floor when you are gone or asleep than you have mastered cage training! And "yes' I would definitely have the dew claws removed. Your breeder should have had them done as a new born. Better to prevent injury later on. You just never know what could happen. Its very painful if they get caught up on something.

| those of you guys that their baby has free roam in the house, don't you worry about them chewing on TV cords, stereo cords anything thats close to the floor??..Can't go around and unplug everything, I think every outlet in my house has something plugged in....Emy is confined to kitchen and front entryway.....I watch her every minute seems like....at night she sleeps in her crate next to me and doesn't make a sound....she still chews alot, and is losing her baby teeth, but I'm not sure I would ever trust her to run free in the house...too much to get into....that would worry me.. |

If you are worried about them sneaking off and taking chunk out of the baseboards or cords you need to be sure they have lot of toys and chews to keep them occupied. You could also try the tether/ leash trining techniques too. It helps you keep an eye on them without them sneaking off and getting into trouble. Your are welcome to take a look at my site for some training tips: Training Tips - Dawn's Yorkies Enjoy the puppy stage... they grow up fast!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I really wish all breeders would do the dew claws, this is fairly simple if you do it when they are newborn, but many breeders don't want to learn how to do it, and don't want to pay the vet to do it. I've read of at least 5 Yorkies here getting their dew claw caught in something and ripping off, and it's very painful and bloody when that happens. If I were you, I'd ask the vet what he thought, is it attached firmly, or is it hanging on by a thread, something in-between? In other words, just how likely is it to become ripped off? The people here who have decided to surgically remove them say recovery takes longer than the neutering recovery takes. If you decide not to do it, get rid of any knitted or crocheted blankets and clip it when you do the other nails. Best of luck!
