If he is not having accidents or chewing up things I would start off by leaving him free in one room that you have puppy proofed and see how that goes. As a puppy Callie hated her crate so as soon as she was potty trained and my room was puppy proofed she graduated to a big dog bed. If the dew claws are not causing any problems I don't think I would remove them. Callie had ripped one of hers off and exposed the vein and nerve and had to be sedated to have it cut back so I am really thinking of whether I should remove them whenever the next time she goes under is. I go back and forth with it.
