| Running outside when the door opens!! Hello, I was hoping that you guys could give us some ideas on how to train little Enzo not to run out the door when it opens. This morning he ran out without his leash and flew across the street. Thank god there were no cars coming. I do not want my next post to be in the R.I.P section. Any ideas on how to stop him, or have him listen to us when we call him back. He's a 5 month old Toy Yorkie. Thank you for any help or ideas, Chris, Season & Enzo... |

| You really need to teach Enzo the stay command. Good luck it is the hardest one to teach. My dogs know it but still dont do it. Luckily my front and back yard are fenced or I would have problems too.

| There is a matt that you can purchase- it lays in front of your door. When bare paws or bare feet step on it or touch it they get a zap. Like a inside invisible fencing. It only takes several times and the out the door gang has learned we don't rush the front door. |

| Chewy loves to run out the door. Luckily I am in an apt. building, but he could run down the stairs and hurt himself What I have started doing is the stay command and showing him my palm straight in his face so that he corresponds the command with the action. It's only been a week or 2 but he IS learning. I would say that and the combination of the mat Kathy spoke of would be ideal. Good luck with little Enzo and remember he is still so young. He will learn and get used to your commands and routine. |

| Instead of shocking the poor little critter, how about: 1) teach a down/stay or a sit/stay? May take a little longer than plugging in a mat, but something he really needs to learn anyway. 2) picking him up when you open the door? 3) putting up a gate between him and the door? While aversives probably do work, why not try a kinder/gentler approach first? |

| Just a brain storm but what if we use some double sided tape near the door? It is much more humane and a lot cheaper. I saw this on a program called "PetKeeping with Mark Morrone". He said to use double sided tape on your furniture or any other area you didn't want your pet to go. The pets don't like the sticky feeling of the tape and quickly learn to avoid the area. I think I may try this first before getting something that shocks the poor little guy.

| We have been so lucky (so far anyway) when we open the front door to get something from the car or take out the rubbish smudger just stands on the step and looks outside i think he is a little scared. we've been hoping that if we dont push him inside or say NO that he won't be interested in running out. I don't know just thought it was worth trying. my mums yorkie makes a run for it every single time the door is opened and she runs straight to the chip shop (don't ask why???) It is really scary and hopefully Smudger won't make a habit of this.

| Teach your little one how to sit. Once you have that down, teach stay. Lots and lots of treats will help. Reward your little one every time he does this right. I did this with Stomper for about 6-8 months (we got him at 8 weeks). You need to be consistent. It is not going to be easy because you need to dedicate the time to teach your little one. Stomper doesn't even go by the door anymore until after I have walked out. Teaching commands will help you be the boss and make your dog feel rewarded for listening...

| Wait! I think it was at YT where I learned that one of the first things to teach your pup was that YOU are the alpha. You go out the door first, you eat first, etc. I taught Wosie to sit at the door, let me go out, and then she does not come out until I say "OK". I had to use treats to teach her, but now she does it on her own. Sometimes when I am preoccupied I just go out, and then wonder where she is! She's on the other side of the door waiting for me to tell her it's OK to come out, lol! Good luck with this one, it'll take some patience, but you can do it.
