| Can you REALLY teach an old dog NOT to pee on the carpet? Hello fello YTers! For those who don't know me, I'm Nicole. I have a 6y/o Yorkie named Baby. We have been a member on YT since 2005. We took a little break, but are back to say hello, spread some knowledge, and ask a question or two. So here is our story...Overall Baby is a good dog. She knows her commands, goes potty outside (mostly), extremely friendly, loves my 1 y/o nephew, etc. My only problem with her is her "accidents" sometimes on the rug. Now, I have the word accident in quotations b/c they are not accidents. I know that some of you may think that dogs don't know it's wrong, yada, yada. But believe me, Baby knows. For example, the other night I'm in my bedroom getting dressed and I turned around and she was out of the room for two seconds. I called her name and she came running so fast back into the bedroom and ran right under the bed. So of course, I said, what did you do? Sure enough, she peed on the carpet in the living room. So, she knows it's bad, it's like she doesn't know how to tell me! Sometimes if I'm on the computer she will look at me and bark or stand by the doorway and bark. Then I know to take her out. Then other times she doesn't want to be bothered to tell me. I don't know what to do. I take her out all the time and only give her treats when she goes outside. I praise her up and down. She knows she's being good when she goes outside. And she knows she's bad when she goes inside. It's so weird. So, besides putting her in a crate (which I won't do-anxiety problems) anyone have any ideas of how to make it stop? I just moved into this new condo and it has all fairly new Berber carpet. My old place had wood and Pergo, so it was easy to clean up. If she keeps going on the rug I'm going to have to tear it up in no time! Any suggestions for this old timer? Thanks!

| I would have her checked for a urinary tract infection. That's number one...then work on the training which is something I fail miserably at. I opted to get rid of all carpets and went with porcelain tile in my home. Easier. Seriously, though, you can train an older pup...I know lots of people will give you some ideas. In the meantime, why not get her some doggie panties/diapers? At least your carpet will be saved. Good luck!

| She doesn't have a UTI or else she would have had it for 6 years now. hehe I thought about the diapers, but that's a pain in the butt. Yes, pun intended. LOL I just wish I knew the right technique to have her tell me she needs to go every single time.

Can you hear me laughing?? I'm sorry....you are TOO funny. Hopefully someone will come along with some answers that are better than mine. There is a website that I think is good....not that I am successful but they do have good tips: Free House Training for Puppies and Adult Dogs - No More Accidents Starting Today!

| PS. Someone awhile ago suggested bells on the door, which is an excellent idea. But, if she won't bark at me every time, like she's really going to use bells! If I ever get another dog, things will be so different let me tell you! No more....oh I don't want to leave her in a pen she's so cute...no way! She's in there until she can pee in the right spot! That was my #1 mistake!

| hmm.....this sounds exactly like Bella. (especially the spite poops/pees) Bella is only 13 weeks but I am almost positive she pooped on my carpet in front of the couch where I sit because she was mad I did not let her in the bathroom with me. My husband thinks I am nuts...but I think Bella does it when she is mad at me! |

| Oh...Bella does not let me know she needs to go. Husband takes her potty at 3:30 am when he leaves and she comes to bed with me. At 7:00 AM - I take her out and she normally does both businesses. She comes to work with me and we walk at 9:30 am but she normally does not pee/poop. At 11:30 we walk and she pees. We walk about 2:30 and she pees. We go home at and outside at 4:45 and she pees. She will poop again sometime in the evening. She will not indicate she has to go....if I don't take her out....she pees where she is. As long as I take her out on this schedule we normally don't have any accidents....once in awhile the spite poop. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | My oldest who was a rescue and not use to using pee pads when I took him in 2 years ago took immediately to the pee pads . My 3 girls, 2 who are pad trained, and one goes outside when she feels like it have "accidents" a lot. I started about 6 months ago retraining by buying special potty treats. They only get them when they either use the pads or Pixie potty's outside. I make a big deal when they go where their supposed to and say now you get a potty treat. It has cut back on a lot of accidents but I still find a spot now an again. I don't think they will ever be 100%. When i either move or redo the flooring here I will get rid of all carpeting.

| That's what we did. All hardwoods and tile. Ginger goes outside but also uses pads when we aren't home. Problem with this is that I have tried to use some small throw rugs and she uses them like a pad. I ended up throwing them all out. The only rug I have that she hasn't messed with is a bamboo rug. I wish I could get her to know the difference in a pad and a rug!

| My mats are gonners too only she rips them up bc she gets mad at me for gating her in the kitchen. Brand new $20 mat. Lasted one day. Garbage. Grr. Funny thing is I lock her in the kitchen in case she has to go at least it's on the tile. Nothing in their yet so I know she can hold her pee! But if I let her roam while I'm not home she will piss and poop all over.
