Only barks when he knows I'm home - Hello there! I recently found this website and am thrilled. My husband and I just got a 5-month old Yorkie male and have instantly fallen in love with him. It's so much fun coming home to him and playing and having him sit on my lap and chew I wanted to see if I could get any advice from someone. I completely understand that it is normal for a dog to bark. However, I have noticed that our little "Hoosier" rarely barks about anything besides knowing we are in another room. When we close the door and shut off the lights to go to bed - he is fine. When I walk outside and lock the door to go to work - he seems fine. He also doesn't bark when we are outside or when he is around other people. For example, I went home for lunch today and we played a little bit and I gave him his kong with some filling while I ate lunch. I went into the spare bedroom to check my email and eat and he kept barking. Is this just something we will have to deal with or is there any tried and true ways to help stop this? I've already tried shaking a coke can with pennies. It works, but then he does it again. Thanks so much! Heather

I agree that it sounds like "demand barking" as well. I don't want to go pick him up because he will think that he can bark and I will cater to him. We've tried to leave him alone and ignore him as much as possible, but we do live in an apartment and I don't want to disturb everyone I know that it isn't a case of him not getting enough attention and play because we give him plenty of attention, but as you all know - you can't be with them all the time. Truly, it's not that bad, but I hate to hear him sound upset and then I feel bad if I ignore him. Thank you.

Thought of something else I wish I'd said. What I mentioned above (ignoring it) is the training half of the equation. The other half is management. Can you prevent the behavior in the first place? Maybe get him interested in a toy before you go to the other part of the house and see if he will continue to play with it. Maybe give him a yummy bone. Maybe put his food in a Kong or other food dispensing toy and let him entertain himself with that until you come back. Let me know how it works out!
