Thought of something else I wish I'd said. What I mentioned above (ignoring it) is the training half of the equation.

The other half is management. Can you prevent the behavior in the first place? Maybe get him interested in a toy before you go to the other part of the house and see if he will continue to play with it. Maybe give him a yummy bone. Maybe put his food in a Kong or other food dispensing toy and let him entertain himself with that until you come back.
