You are lucky that your bf helps teachers her tricks. Uni is super smart! Thanks for the videos. I've been taking what you said and hold the treat near her shoulder. She's been starting to rollover in the grass. So we're definitely getting started somewhere. ![]()

| ![]() Speak was one of the easiest to teach, and we used this same method with a few dogs. We just had a treat in our hand, and held out our hands palms facing out with fingers open, and just said "speak". They will eventually speak if they want that treat! We had a bull terrier and he was kinda slow LOL and he got this really fast. It's good to teach speak, bc then they will understand "no speak" or "no bark" The grass thing makes sense too. I forgot to mention that. Uni still does not like to roll over on anything other than carpeting, and even doesn't like to sit on the cold kitchen floor without a towel under her butt.

| ![]() Uni didn't bark until we had her for about one month. She would whine and cry, but no barking. When she finally did, there was a girl in my shop, and she asked if she has barked yet. I said no, and just after that Uni barked! LOL With drop it, I have a hint. What I've learned that works with Uni is to hold out my hand and not try to pull it from her. Otherwise she thinks it becomes a game of tug of war. I just hold out my hand and say "drop it" and she usually squeaks the ball or toy in my hand until she is ready to let it go. As soon as she let's go I say "good drop!" Now if she is not bringing it to your hand, then I don't know what to do. LOL

| ![]() Oh I have some hints for leave it also. We did this with a treat or kibble and she caught on really fast. We put her in a sit and put out one piece of food on the floor, as we are putting it down we say "leave it". She would go for it, but we'd say, "No, leave it" and kind of cover it with our hand. Slowly take away your hand while still saying leave it. If she starts to movie in, as soon as she starts say No leave it again and cover it again with your hand. Until she doesn't go for it and you are able to take your hand completely back, then say Good leave, ok get it! and point to it, and she would get it. The funny thing is, when we say leave it, Uni can NOT look at the food! It's like if she looks at it, she's going for it. So she has to look away. Usually at me. It's so cute.

When we play fetch With Lilo she usually runs back, walks from behind me then puts the toy in my hand to tug. I've been trying to teach her drop it by putting a treat under her mouth until she drops the toy and then comes the praise. If it doesn't work I'll try your way. Sometimes she gets it other times she just prances around with the toy in her mouth and drops it a foot away from me. ![]() Lol. Aww Uni is soo cute. That is so funny that she wont look at it... So if she's running for something and you say leave it, will she just stop and walk away? This hints are really helpful! Thank you!

| ![]() It has come to the point that she knows "drop it". Even with Smokey and Chole, they have been known to get yucky things like CAT POOP! I say NO! DROP IT! in a frantic voice and they seem to know to drop it.

| ![]() This thread prompted me to remember to train Tashi daily... she is stuck on down. I say down.. she sits >.< She's so little and my "down" hand motion for her limited because eye-level-to-floor is such a short distance. I hope I can figure out a way to get her to lay down :P She's getting irritated with all my trying , but the treats keep coming so she's not too mad ![]() What's your hand signal to get Lilo to do down ? What about Uni (capt noonie) ? Thanks <3 Not trying to hijack your thread, just figured I'd ask ![]() |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | ![]() I looked through this quickly and didn't see any mention of the sneeze trick. That's a fun one, and easy to teach if you've got a fetcher. You sneeze, and the dog goes and fetches you a Kleenex! I started by rolling the Kleenex into a ball and tossing it just like fetch. Once they get used to the texture, then you don't roll it up as much. Just get them to bring the open Kleenex. Then lay it on top of a box of Kleenex and get them to fetch. Lastly, leave it in the box. Add the sneeze cue whenever you want. You say fetch and then sneeze. Eventually, all you have to do is sneeze.

Another method I have seen Victoria Stillwell use: Sit on the floor with one leg out and bent at the knee to make a sort of tunnel. Have the dog come in from the outside and put your hand with the treat on the inside of your leg. Say down and slowly pull the treat through underneath your leg. If they want the treat they will have to get down under your leg. As soon as the elbows hit the ground, treat them. I have had 50/50 success with this method.

I uploaded a quick-and-dirty iphone video to show the sneeze trick. It's cuter when he goes a long distance to get the tissue, but the other dogs weren't giving him room to roam today. And I'm having a heck of a time figuring out how to embed with the new youtube urls, so it may not show up as a screen here. Eddie sneeze trick - YouTube
