Lol, sorry, I've been bad at checking the training forum! Actually, we haven't been training anything new either. A few months ago, he learned how to do backwards circles around my legs. But since then, nothing really. Every night we do about 5-10 mins of just repeating the stuff he knows.

Now.... Can anyone tell me about agility and yorkies together? I know they have to be older than a year to start... I'm interested but someone I met said Lilo couldn't do it since she looked like she would be too small. I was so disappointed... We tried weaving with my friends agility kit and it was so much fun...

Agility is SOOOOO much fun! And so addicting. Seeing Eddie and Mike compete is what made me want to try Jackson out. He took to it like a champ. Caught on really fast. At our "final" he actually completed the course the fastest (even though it was still fairly slow, due to it being our first class) and beat out a Shepherd, a Retriever, a Corgi, a Beagle mix, and a Goldendoodle, LOL. Everyone was so impressed with my little dog.

btw, is Uni a mix? i was just wondering cuz she looks like she has longer legs than what i have been seeing in pure Yorkies. My little Hobo is a mix between a Yorkie and a wire hair Terrier and he has really LONG legs, but looks more like a Yorkie everywhere else!!!!

I think we got the basketball hoop at Target? It was in the toy section.

As far as I know she is full yorkie, but is off standard with color. But from what I have been told by a few show breeders, is a yorkie should be as tall (from the shoulder to floor) as they are long (from base of neck to base of tail) so their coat would be a perfect square when grown out. Uni's coat won't grow anymore The short leg cobby body yorkies we mostly see today are bred that way from customer demands (teddy bear face, doll face, teacup, etc), and shouldn't be that way according to standard.

Ok. I've got to ask how you taught Boo "show me"? Is there somewhere I could read about how to go about teaching something like that? I can see where that would be a very useful comand.

It's really easy. Whenever you are doing something and your pup comes to you whining, that is a prime opportunity. Just get up from what you are doing and ask them, what do you want? show me? and do a specific hand signal with it. I do both my hands straight down by my hips, fingers spread and palms out towards them. Like, what? And just follow them until they bring you to what they want. Then when you figure it out, let them have what they want and reward them with praise.

He learned sit and down really fast but is not getting the shake yet. I have him sit and say shake and lift his paw then give him kibble. I repeat this over and over but he still won't lift his paw volunteeringly. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. This is how I taught my Labs.

I did a lot of reading on google when I first started teaching Lilo. when we taught her to shake I would hold my hand out and use my other hand to hold the treat over my other open palm. Usually when I did this Lilo would put both her front paws on my hand to reach for the treat, then I would just grasp one paw say "good shake" then treat her. there are are many variations on how to teach shake. I would look on you tube for tutorial ideos until you find the one that works best for Bear and you.

Thanks for responding. It sounds like you're a great trainer with a great dog! Sophie and Ziggy know sit and come, and a few words like eat, treat, outside, ball, get your toy and maybe a few more words and phrases. I'm going to start working with them more now too. I taught my Labs give me your paw, instead of shake, but it's the same concept. They know many tricks and learned so fast. Good idea about the you tube videos, I don't know why I didn't think of that! I'm also going to go to the library tomorrow and check out some books and videos. Thanks again!
