| What to do now?? Ella is 18 weeks old now - we got her at 10 weeks. Initially we were going to train her to go potty inside on a grass patch because she is so little and we never thought she would get down our back concrete step on her own. That lasted a couple weeks and she finally got up and down the step so we decided to switch her to outside training. So for the last 5 weeks we have taking her out - ringing a bell - giving treats and she will still potty in the house anywhere if given a chance so it obviously not connecting with her what to do. All of a sudden today - she goes 3 different times right in front of us as she is in the living room playing with us into her playpen to pee or poo. The initial couple weeks when we would leave the house - we would leave her in her playpen with the grass patch. Nothing in there today but her bed and a few toys. We want her to go outside but I am getting frustrated with the whole not getting it thing - what do I do now? Should I start putting pads in her playpen?? Help............

| I think she is just use to what you had her trained to do before. Give it time, she'll get it. For example, Kaji is trained to go on a piddle pad in the bathroom. If I forget to put one down for him, he still goes in the bathroom, because that is the designated potty spot. They're smart, and can catch on quick! But, we have to remember they don't speak human, and we don't speak dog. When teaching them, so you have to take that into consideration as well. If the pen has enough room for her to comfortably pee in one spot and it's far away from her bedding and food, it might be too much room. Make it smaller, and relocate if you have to so she doesn't associate it as a potty spot. She's also very little, meaning she might be needing a potty break every 1-2 hours. If you have the time, take her out often, and only let her roam and play outside of the pen after she has piddled.

| What do you do when you see her go potty in the house? Are you keeping her in a confined area? Are you watching her constantly when she's in the house? Does she give any clues as to when she has to go? I have found with our pup that a firm NO if you catch him in the act is sufficient to let him know that behaviour is not desired in that place. Treats and praise when going outside, every time. Ozzy always sniffs around before he goes, so he is good at giving us visual clues that he needs to go out. He's confined to the main floor (we have 3 floors), and if we can't watch him at all times he goes into his crate, but a playpen is good too (we have one on order!). Also, take her out often, like every time she wakes from a nap, shortly after eating/drinking, after fairly rambunctious play, etc. Don't worry, she will get it, but it may take longer because she's already learned that it IS ok to go in the house. She's probably going to be confused by the change in rules. Patience and diligence!

| She just has puppy brain. With my previous dog I trained her on the potty pad and then outdoors. I took one of her potty pads outside with use for her to go potty on. Eventually she picked up the outdoor potty also. I ordered some of the potty pad holders to make it easy to put the pad down and not have it blown away. I would recommend putting the grass part (I think you can buy replacement grass) of the grass patch outside for her to go on to help her learn. She will see the patch and know what to do. Good luck and let us know how it goes. |

| Thank you for the advice and encouragement!! I am going to stay on track with taking her outside and hoping it will connect soon!! Only one accident in the house yesterday and I am crating her a little more and letting her have less freedom which I hate but if it will get her trained faster - life will become easier!!
