Potty Training Woes I recently adopted Zeli (short for Zelda), 3 yrs., and have since decided it was, actually, something of a rescue. While the family I received her from didn't seem to be short on love & spoiling, Zeli was clearly not well-trained and hygiene was somewhat neglected. I've kept her on the food they gave her just to minimize the amount of change going on at once, but I don't think that agrees with her either and so will be changing with the next purchase ;( But! The biggest problem is potty training. I was told of course that she is housetrained, which is very clearly not the case. (I theorize the issue is that she was surrounded by 7 other dogs at her previous home, and was less "housetrained" than emulating them all the time.) She seems to have NO idea that I expect her to GO when I take her outside. I have decided on the crating method, and she has no trouble holding it when in the crate for hours (overnight). Every morning, the first thing I do is take her out of the crate and go directly outside. Amazingly, she does nothing! [HOW can she not have to pee after being crated for 7-8 hours?!] I bring her inside and put her back in the crate while I get ready for the day, and then take her outside again. She does ... yep, nothing. It may be hours later, but she will eventually go in the house. Also, she does not poop regularly. For instance, she did not go at all yesterday, and has yet to go today. (She was just at the vet a week ago, and all is well.) On the 3 occasions when she has peed/pooped outside, I've dutifully praised her. I've even offered treats immediately after to let her know she has done well, and get this-- she refuses them! This is the only time she is not interested in a treat. Sometimes when I take her outside-- always to the same spot-- she will just lie down and refuse to get up. What am I doing wrong!? Zeli is the sweetest little dog, and generally eager to please, but she just doesn't get it when it comes to potty training. I have searched these and other forums and am reaching my wit's end. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Do you have a command for her to go potty? Because i'd be pretty confuzed if sometimes I'm not supposed to pee and other times I got treats for for it for some reason. Especially if I'm so used to peeing in a house where its safe and smells like me. I don't really think she's gotten used to the concept of peeing outside. Because in the past its just something she didn't do. She has no reason to go outside unless you tell her to.

A few things I've learned from training with our little guy... He'll pee anywhere, but he only poop in certain areas (like only where other dogs go). Maybe you could try taking Zeli to a different spot to go for a while. It's a bit of a pain, but that might help, and you'd probably only have to do it until she's trained. Also, I know it's sometimes really difficult, but until she's 100% trained, never take your eyes off her in the house. If you can't actually see her, she should be in the crate. I find that sometimes Ozzy would refuse treats after going, but I changed the treat to a different one and now he never refuses. Also, you might just have to give her some time to adjust. Good luck! I think potty training is the most difficult part of being a doggy owner.

She just needs to 're-set' her habits from what they were at her previous home. You should also change her food gradually, not all of a sudden when she is out of the stuff her previous owners fed her. Go ahead and buy new, and change out 1/8th to 1/4th of the brand you usually feed her and replace it with the new for a week. Do that for each week and gradually increase the new until the old is out and the new is all that is left to eat. That should be less tummy upset for her. Keep doing the crate training and when she is lose in the house put on her leash and attach it to yourself so that you know what she is up to at all times. You should be paying attention to what she is doing as you are doing other things, cleaning, watching tv, cooking. Then when you notice she is looking for a place to use the bathroom, you should take her out immediately. If you cannot keep an eye on her, then crate her until you are finished, then bring her out and take her outside and give her your potty and/or pee command. I hope this helps, good luck
