| Need advice! My bad boy has a bad habit...help! So my sweet boy, whom I thought was perfect (minus a few minor things has a horrible habit. He is two years old and completely potty trained accept for when I'm sleeping, somewhere between 5-7am, he jumps out of bed and poops in the living room! I get to wake up every morning to a pile of poop in random places. He has been doing it for a few months now. I need some advice because I'm not sure how to stop his habit. Normally when he has to go potty he tells me by scratching at the door but his morning visit to the living room is stealthy and silent, no warnings. He was crate trained but has been in bed with me since he was about 11months. Should I go back to the crate? I feel like I've tried everything but that. I try to get up with him, jump out of bed and let him out but now he will go out when I let him, not potty and when I go back to bed he waits until I'm asleep or not paying attention and sneaks into the living room to poop. How do I break this habit?? I also have an 8 mo old girl who sleeps in a crate still. Thanks for the advice!!

| Can you go back to crate-training just until he gets out of the habit - just to stop it in its tracks? Or, block off his access to the LR. His doing this says to me that he is not able to hold it all night. How about also moving his evening meal and/or evening treats to a much earlier time so that he won't digest it and pass it in the wee hours?

| It's weird because my heart tells me that I can't do without him in bed...I love my little snuggle bug but my brain tells me that he needs to sleep in his crate, not in bed. That is a whole other topic... Thanks so the suggestion, I will try to feed them earlier in the day so maybe he can get out all the poop before bed. My instincts do tell me that going back to the crate will solve the problem. But I'm at the point now, after more than a year in bed, that he doesn't want to be in the crate. He cries and cries at bed time. He will settle down eventually but I feel so bad

| If he is going between 5-7 AM everyday he is telling you he CAN'T hold it past that time period. If I were you I would wake up at 4:45 and take him out, give him the chance to go when he has to go.

Has his type of food or anything else changed along with this early pottying?

| Yes, his food has changed. Actually it has changed quite a few times since. I am trying to find something that both he and Scarlett can eat that doesn't break the bank so there has been a lot of trial and error. I will definitely see what happens when he eats earlier and they always get an evening snack that I will change to an afternoon snack just to see if that helps. Thanks for all the feedback!

| Can you attach a leash to him in your bed? That way he can't jump off it? I did this one night with Jackson at my dads house back when he would chase the cats at night. I just held onto his leash so he couldn't get away.

| I have it worse because my lil guy cant jump off the bed and cant go down the ramp so I wake up to unpleasant surprises at the end of the bed! I can't find it in my heart to not bring him into bed since Porscha comes up and down as she pleases. He has to completely stretch his neck up to look up at us and he won't stop until I give in (which isn't long). He hasn't even barked yet at 6.5 months. Ugh...it doesn't help that he is the best to sleep with!

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | I do the same thing with my dogs....up in the early morning and than back to bed for four more hours. Wheather they come back to my bedroom or out roaming the house. I rarely have a problem with them needing to go back out or making any messes. They always wait until I get up. Try making his last meal of the night earlier/with no late night snacks. Be sure that he has had a potty break as late into the evening as possible. Than make his first potty break in the morning earlyier as well. Making sure to leave him out long enough to potty (pee & poo). If you leave him out for 5-10 min make it 10-15. Should do the job..

| Shut the door to your room so when he jumps down he can not leave the room, he won't go in there it is akin to his "crate" only open your bedroom door when you are up and ready to take him potty |

| Heidi has a problem with this too. She will go to the room her puppy pad is in, but do it on the floor about a foot or two from the pad. She knows better. In the morning, I'll walk to her pad with her and she'll actually make sure that I see it. I guess she's just checking to see if she can get a treat for it. lol Not. My solution is putting a leash on her at night and wrapping the end of the leash to my arm to wake me up when she gets up to go. Course, I still have to get up and walk in there with her, but it does work.

| Have there been any major changes in the household or the yard that may affect him? I'd also take him to the vet for a check-up to rule out anything medical. If all that checks out... I would put him on a leash and walk him last thing at night, and instead of just letting him out in the morning, walk him on a leash then until he eliminates, and praise and treat him. Because he has gone outside early and comes back in to do his business, that's telling me something is going on here, or something is wrong.
