| Crate barking/roommates issue So I am a college student and I live with 3 other people. We all have our own rooms, but when I leave and crate Owen, he just barks and barks and cries and whines forever. I have tried everything to have him quiet down, but nothing works. He has a good association with his crate as well... he constantly crawls in there on his own and lays down. I have tried treats, ignoring him, etc. NOTHING has worked. It is really disruptive to my roommates, especially when I have to leave early in the morning for class or they are trying to study or something. I would LOVE to let him just run around our house, but that is too much responsibility to lay on my roommates when I am not around. They are not willing to play with him and let him out when he needs to. I am moving out and living by myself in an apartment in August, so that should be a better situation for him and I.. but I need a solution for now!

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I would look into an x-pen. That would allow him to move around more and Taycie loves hers! I got mine at petsmart. Midwest Black Exercise Pens with Doors - Dog - Web Exclusive - PetSmart I put her bed in it, you could put his crate in it too.. and she has her water and toys... Taycie can also get yippy, I live in a basement apartment right now and when she can hear them upstairs she makes more noise.. I would also try leaving a T.V. on in your room or some soft music. It really helps relax her and it muffles the sound from upstairs so she can relax more. They used to tell me they could hear her and they ask me often, is Taycie downstairs?.. They never hear her anymore. I did read a thread recently about Stress Relieving Pheromones that is supposed to help them when they get stressed. She had wonderful results and with time this might help you too http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...heremones.html

| You don't say how old your dog is. If the dog is very young it would have to be separation anxiety which usually goes away over time, but probably not soon enough for now. Any way you can get one of those carry bags for small dogs that go over your shoulder and just bring the dog with you? Without knowing how old the dog is this will be hard to diagnose, but you might try one of those ultrasonic antibark things. The one I'm talking about is like a box with a mic and a speaker and you just put it near the dog, not on the dog. A bark will set off the device which makes a sound most dogs don't like. Make sure you can return it, because I've tried two of these now on two dogs and they didn't work for me. That said, many people swear by them. |
