Exclamation I just can't do it...crate training.

I just got a 7-week old, and I knew that I was getting her too young and that I was going to be in for a rough ride...but I haven't slept well once in the three days that I've had her.

We had a travel kennel when we bought her and it was fine the first night - I held her until she was asleep then put her in. She woke up twice to potty and went right back in. Second night she fussed a bit at first - took her out and held her until she fell asleep, then it was the same as the first night.

But the third night, oh my God. She would instantly wake up every time I tried to put her in the kennel. Ended up crashing on the couch with her on my chest after 4 hours of trying to get her in the kennel. At 6am I put her in, I was so exhausted I didn't care. She cried...then silence. She pooped all over. Tried re-crating her at 7, stayed in for 40 minutes screaming the entire time before I took her out. Fell asleep until 9:30 on my chest, was able to crate her at 11:30 for about half an hour - after falling asleep in my arms first.

Tonight it's been even worse...she wasn't eating well, so I took her to the vet. On the way home she cried the whole time before peeing in the travel bag about 5 minutes into the drive home. We introduced her to the wire crate the boyfriend bought and she seemed to love it. Played in it, chewed toys in it. Tried to put her in for the night at 8, she woke up at 9, chewed for a bit then went back to sleep. Woke up at 10:30 to pee. We put her back in and she went nuts. Cried for an hour before pooping in the crate at 11:15-ish. Thinking that she just needed to be worn out, I played with her a bit and she finally went down around 1:30. Woke up at 2:30, I took her to pee which she did. Put her back in to discover she had pooped in there yet again. Don't know if it was before or after she peed. Held her for about 45 minutes, but every time I tried to put her in she cried. Put her in (crying) and left the room at 3:30, not 2 minutes later I come back in and find she has YET AGAIN pooped all over. That's 2 sets of sheets, a pillowcase, 2 blankets, and a towel all pooped on in less that 24 hours.

Now I'm in bed and she's asleep on my chest. I don't know what to do, I haven't stopped crying. Is she too young to crate train? Should I keep her in bed with me until she's a little older? How can I tell if she's just whining in the crate or if she has to go? How long is too long to leave her in her crate shrieking?

I can't take it, I knew I wasn't going to get a lot of sleep but I thought I'd be averaging better than an hour a night. How can I get it back to the first two nights? Am I screwing her up completely?

Maybe put her crate on your bed so she can see/smell you while you get some sleep?
Not really sure though, no experience with such a young pup.

Hi, I brought George home at 8weeks and he has been great . Did crate him at night for a few nights but he cried so much but he used the pad all day without prompting and slept in the crate with the door open so we just made sure he was in a very safe area and left him down stairs with his food and water accessible..it worked out fine he never cried at the gate ...I left a night light for him ..as soon as we went up stairs he'd go in his crate ..I'd sneak down after about 10 mins and he'd be still there ....he's 7 months now and sleeps thru the night in bed with me ,this started during his healing from neutering, he kept working his mouth under the cone and getting it caught so he needed to be watched or at least close by ...but that was weeks ago and now he just sleeps with me and does he hate to get up in the morning loves to sleep until 8 or 8:30..not sure if any of this helps you.

Sorry I should have said I use the pads because at the time George came home we were heading into cold weather and he took to the pads so well we continued with those ...hoping to switch to outside in the spring ...

Everytime you pick her up when she cries you are "rewarding" her behavior. You are going to have to do one or the other, sleep in your bed or in the crate. She is awful young and misses her littermates and mom. You are now her mom and are going to have to teach her the things her mother would.

Patience and consistency is the key here. Try putting your fingers through the crate when she cries so that she knows you are there. Or, put her crate in another room with a TV on so that you can finally get some rest. Good luck to you.

7 weeks is way too early to be crate training a Yorkie pup. Buy an xpen and put a piddle pad in one corner, her bed and food and water in another corner.

You will have a much happier and healthier pup and you will be happier.

Remember these little ones have very small bladders, and a 7 week old has barely begun to be able to control potty habits. She needs access to potty at all times of the day.

I had Rocco home at 8 weeks. The first night he was in his area which is the kitchen with his crate with door open but kitchen entranceway gated. He cried and cried. Someone on YT suggested I put the crate in my bedroom next to me. Well that worked like a charm. He would give a wimper twice durning the night and I knew it was time to potty so I would take him to potty in the kitchen on his pad and then he would go back to sleep in the crate. I did get up two or three times every night to do this and he did get up very early in the morning but it was pretty much a schedule. Now at 8 months Rocco sleeps in the bed with me and has his stairs to get him on and off the bed during the night to potty if need be!! And he also gets up about 15 minutes after I do in the morning!! Likes to have the bed to himself

Agree shes so young to be from her momma and siblings, Try toys that makes noise, TV, stuffed toys made for dogs so she cant tear it up and get the cotton out, Around this time mom would be teaching her many things,How to play, when play becomes to rough, manners,to potty away from her sleeping area, how to eat, Some momms will even chew the food and spit it back up for pup like a bird does, So the fact shes away from her momma is hard, Shell need lots of love and attention, If sleeping in the bed with you is not a problem then welcome the pup, but once you start she will more then likely never sleep elase where, Good luck and have fun with your new baby,PS try putting a mirror where she can see her self, My pups are almost 4 weeks old and love the mirror.

Hi Welcome to YT!!

With a pup that young...I wouldn't start crate training just yet, I wouldn't even try potty training cause she is to young to go outside...use potty pads...she is way to young to be away from her Mother and littermates.

I would try a play yard instead of a crate...you can put food/water/toys/bed/potty pads in them and she can see everything that is going on...I would keep her in the play yard at all times, only taking her out to play with her for a few minutes at a time...you don't wanna over handle her or make her so tired her sugar level drops...puppies at her age need food/water out for them 24/7...they can NOT hold there pee/poop at all at this age...thats why she needs a place that will hold her bed/toys/food/water on one side and potty pads on the other side...I wouldn't start any training until she is 12 weeks old.

Puppies are like kids if they cry and you run to them they will continue to cry cause they know its only a matter of time before you will come and get her and thats probably why she is getting worst and cause she is so young, she is not use to being alone...she always had mom and littermates with her...I would let her cry as long as you know she is ok...just let her work it out...you might try getting one of these stuffed toys that has the heart beat in it...you can get them at pet smart...you said she falls asleep on your chest so she is hearing your heart beat..and put a few other toys in with her so she has something to snuggle up too...and I would put that play yard right by your bed so she can see and smell you..I hope this helps...good luck.

Here is the play yard I 'm talking about...you can order them online from Ebay...I have the 24x44 and it perfect for my pup and he is 5 mos old I also have a large one 36x57 that I keep downstairs, the small one I keep upstairs by my bed and he never cry...he loves his play yards they are like his safe place, he goes right in...and so will your baby once she gets use to it...make her world revolve around her play yard so that its fun and safe for her

daisy is about 4.5months old now and she sleeps with us, but when we have to work she will go in her crate with no complaining. what i did was during the day put her in there for maybe 10min with me in the room and when she was quite i would reward her. then i would slowly leave her in there longer and longer and leave the room and reward her everytime she was good in there now she loves it and when she gets sleepy during the day she will go in there and nap. maybe you could try something like that hope everything works out.

I got my Kody young and had begun the pads but once I took him to the vet and asked about outside training, I was told it was okay to do so - actually better because then he wouldn't get confused when I tried to switch him. Everyone will tell you something different to do, but you'll have to do what works best for you, your family and your schedule. All the advice given is good and I sometimes refer back to it as well.

That being said, Kody did fine with pee/poop outside. Since he was young when I got him, that required me to adjust my schedule to his. It was necessary to take him out often because of his small bladder and him not giving me a signal as of yet of when he had to got Potty. The magic word being use POTTY.

I crate trained him from the beginning. What I learned since he was so small, even though the crate was small, it was way too much room in there for him. So what I had to end up doing was to stuff a sheet in there to alleviate some of the extra space and it worked like a charm. Before then, the first night he had pooped in there. Since putting the sheet in there and only leaving enough space for him to turn and lay he felt more secure. I never had a problem since then. Also I put the crate beside my bed so he could see, hear and smell me. Since this time, he has grown in weight and length and I was able to remove the sheet from the crate allowing him to now stretch out. Still no problem with pee/poop in the crate. He did whine for the first week or so, but he eventually grew out of it and now, goes to bed when everyone else does with no problem. The key like everyone else said is consistentcy.

I take him out to pee prior to bed time and then again between 11pm and 12am. We rise and shine at 5a.m. (he's our alarm clock) and he goes out to Potty - pee/poop at this time. I knew I would never have him sleeping with me, so I didn't want to start that process.

Kody is now 12 weeks and we still have accidents in the house - which is normal and to be expected. But for the most part - he does his duty outside when we go. He still hasn't learned to give me a signal of when he needs to go out. I know to take him out after meals, sleep and playtime. Other than that, the in between times, I just judge for myself and take him out about every hour.

I invested in the training bells to see if they will work with him telling me when he has to potty. I've only had them for a couple of days - so no significant progress as of yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I wish you luck. It's definitely just like have a newborn baby. My first couple of weeks, I didn't get any sleep. Now we are on a schedule and I've adapted to him and he to me.

Thanks, this is exactly what I was thinking. I'm getting an xpen tomorrow. I'll whip up a make-shift one tonight in our hallway.
