These may not be practical day to day options, but if you say, do it once a week, maybe he'll start noticing that if he's quieter, he gets out for his walk faster and he gets more food.

I think this is part of why barking is so hard to address, when it happens EVERYWHERE, it's hard to correct it consistently.

I can try that. That's the logic I'm trying to use with the door, instead of the harness. The door only opens when he's calm (or at least quiet). I'm going to do these things everyday. Business is slowing down so I hope to spend a good part of my day training them.

It seems that my issue with Max starts immediately after I put the harness on and we go to the door. That's when the anxiety begins. Before the door even opens, he's barking like crazy. We haven't even gotten to the point of object triggers he's anxious/excited right from the start. I've made the mistake in the past just to take him out and as long as we got past the driveway he was fine the entire time. Now he started barking from the get go again. I can't very well throw a treat because I'm rewarding his barking. I say Shhh Quiet, he'll stop for 2 seconds, I give him a treat and he barks again. We repeat this continually. He's never really calming down. I'll keep working on it but I don't know if I'm doing it correctly.

Oh i feel your pain! i just have tried almost everything with Sadie and we can't go anywhere and she only gets worse. now she's chasing little kids ankles when they walk (SOFTLY) across the house, and don't get me started on walks. i'm worried sick that if she doesn't control herself and we decide to have a child that she's going to bite them and be out of her mind then and i'll have to let her go to someone else. that kills me to know end to even think of having to give her up. i'm working so hard to prevent that. please pray for my patience and for Sadie to LEARN TO BE NICE AND QUIET!!

You definitely can't give up Sadie. Have you attempted clicker training with her?

yes we are working on that now. it's just hard because she gets it so perfectly until a person comes inside the house and then it's all out the window and she goes over threshold and just will not listen. but she's doing better. she's trying to hard to close her mouth i can almost see her lips quiver and she's sitting for a second for me to try the watch me command even when she's super excited. but that all goes out the window when the guests come all the way into the house or move around esp. kids. she chases at their feet and barks. and if anyone laughs or gets loud she barks. it's very very hard to get her to calm down. eventually if she knows them she'll even lay down and go to sleep but if she doesn't know them it's hell! and believe me i don't plan to give up on Miss Sadie. she's here to stay her whole life so long as she doesn't EAT my babies

Daisy going to a obedience class and what we've been learning that when she starts to bark i simply ignore her i turn my back to her and wait till she is quite when she is finally quite i give her big big praise and a treat. it's worked wonders for her, she has learned that barking doesn't get her anything but being calm and quite will get her rewards...that may work for you

i'm using this too especially when she is barking AT me for food or a toy. i turn away from her like a snot so she gets the picture that i will not be barked into doing anything.
