| You should never hit a dog for any reason. Tapping a dog in the face only makes them fearful of human hands which is obviously not a good thing. Please consider taking a puppy class or basic obedience class where you will learn effective positive behavioral interventions that will work a lot better and you and your dog will be happier!

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I think your dog should always be confident that when your hand approaches it will be a good thing. Otherwise you may end up with a dog that shies or runs away when you approach, or even bites. |

| I would have to agree no tapping or taping (I think the OP meant tapping). Your dog needs to learn the meaning of the word "No" and tapping is not the solution. I used the pennies in a can to get her attention and then corrected Sophie Kate. I try very hard not to use punishment on my Yorkie that I would not want used on me and tapping or taping my nose would be considered cruel so the same goes for my Yorkie.

| When we first got Bonnie I tried this, worked for her, but poor littie RU was so terrifed he ran up to my bed and wouldnt come down for the night- So now I'll use a rolled up paper and hit my hand with it. Funny when I put it down RU and Bonnie try to tear it up!

And to whoever said they tap their dog "under the chin" you really shouldn't do that. Doesn't matter where you tap/hit, you are teaching them to fear your hands. In fact, when a dog is fearful it is suggested that one not reach to pet that dog on his head, rather reach under the chin as it is less threatening.

I do the pennies in a can or squirt with water (usually reserved for out-of-control barking).

| Not really! Yorkies are pretty sensitive and you can make them fearful of your hands which wont help with training. I use a spray bottle or pennies in a can for mine and that gets the point accross

To a dog attention is attention - good or bad. The best thing to do is ignore behavior you don't want. Reward the behavior you do want. They live for our attention and pretty soon they are going to figure out what gets them that. Puppy class is great! I highly recommend it. | |

| They really shouldn't be afraid of either. I used the water and it got to where I didnt even have to squirt her she would see it and stop what she was doing. Now that she is 3 the word no works.

| I wouldn't tap or tape a dog's nose!! I tried pennies in a can and he just barked like crazy. I find the tone of my voice works best. Last night I was giving him his medication (that he doesn't like) and he turned around and showed his teeth. I said to him in a very stern voice- You no bite Mommy. Now go sit in your bed! Then after a minute or two I gave him his medicine and a great big hug. |

No Longer a Member | You shouldn't be using any kind of physical punishment for dogs, big or small, they'll just learn to fear you and that is not a good thing. I just clap my hands and that gets Rizzo's attention and I can then correct him by giving him something else to do that isn't bad. I taught him to stop barking this way as well, so now (at least when we're inside and there isn't an intruder trying to pet him outdoors) he'll stop barking when I tell him "Quiet" and I've never ever laid a bad hand on him...or taped him! That is awful, imagine putting tape from your scalp down around your mouth (as I'm assuming you'd tape his mouth??) and then tear it off. Is that a good feeling? Use positive reinforcement and you'll have a well behaved dog that loves you (not fears you) |

YT 2000 Club Member | I just use the dogs name with a sharp NO after when my dogs are doing something wrong and if they are being stubborn a clap or two and it works. I agree with the others, hitting a dog or any animal for that matter just shouldnt be done. It makes them afraid and defensive and more likely to bite.. You wouldnt like to be hit right,?? We teach our kids not to hit, why would we hit our pets???
