Is tapping a dog's nose for punishment a good idea? I don't want to use violence to punish my puppy but is tapping his nose works?? You use your fingers or tape? Tape for how long?... |
I'm sorry, I am not sure if you are talking about "tapping-like a knocking, tap tap" or "taping-you mention tape-as in Scotch Tape". I don't thump the nose and have never used tape (so sorry I am just not sure which you are referring to). We use a water bottle set on stream (rather than spray). It works great for the dogs and cats. :) |
I grew up that when dogs are bad you tap there nose but when I got Callie if I did it to her (not hard) she would nip my finger and then run like haha I got you last plus it can teach dogs to be afraid of hands. I am a big fan of the squirt bottle it doesn't hurt them but they dont like it and learn pretty fast what it means. Now me and Callie have this thing where when I put my finger toward her like a few inches from her nose she will put her nose to my finger for a second its like one of our special ways we say love ya but if she is mad at me she wont do it and she will not do it with anyone else but me. |
Do you mean taping the nose!? I've never heard of that, and I do not think it should be done! |
I would say be very careful tapping a dog on the nose, because there are a lot of very delicate nerves and blood vessels. A rolled up newspaper under the shin would work best. I read the mothers grab the pups by the scruff when they are naughty, so that's what I do if Teegy has to be disciplined. He already knows, they already know they have been naughty, and he knows that means mum isn't happy. I pick him up and he gets a good telling off. |
Put some pennies in a can and shake it whenever he is bad. He will soon learn to stop the behavior without having to touch. Your hands should be used to love him not hit or tap. |
I wouldn't tap or tape... I find myself saying "are you kiddding me?" lol....he stops on a dime, whatever he is doing...lol.. |
I'm confused by the question..especially "fingers or tape"..I was thinking tape as in Scotch Tape:eek: Either way I agree with Lisette, coins in a can works well :) |

 Another thing that works with puppies is directing their behavior to more constructive things. For example, when they chew things they should not, stop them and give them something they can chew and say good boy/girl. You always want to keep the mood positive. You don't want a puppy doing negative things for attention! They key word in successful training: Praise! :) Good luck and enjoy your puppy! |
what my vet told me to do is takea rolled up news paper and swat the ground beside him real hard but not to hit him. Also I just tell him no or AH AH real loude and clap my hnds real loud |

Have you ever had your nose Tapped? No Tapping....or taping! |
We were taught to tap under the chin never on top because they become skiddish to hands coming to pet or even a human offering a hand to sniff first. And they tend to nip or bite then. or to cower and act afraid. I have been told in training by very experienced trainers to do this also. But I myself have only used it on my bigger dogs. Collies, shepareds and labs. But I have had to use it once or twice when Cooper had bit me for something I was tring to do to him. (Trim toenails, mostly) But only once or twice. Now I use a sonic noise maker or a rattle and that works good . But he is almost 3 yrs old too. Hope this helps. Cheryl |
 i dont agree with tapping or taping , a big thumbs down to both :thumbdown:thumbdown love jill n poppy xx :aimeeyork |
