| Adult Yorkie using wee wee pad- Healthy? I have a new Yorkie puppy and was considering keeping him wee wee pad trained even as an adult. I live in a high rise apt in NYC and was told by the breeder that this is ok, but recently had a friend tell me she considers this animal abuse. I was really offended because that is not my intention. Could you tell me if any of you have adult Yorkies that still use the wee wee pad? and Do you think this is healthy? Thanks! |

| all of mine have used potty pads. no way i'm going to let them go outside when it's 110+ degrees for weeks on end. i'd say it's animal abuse to put them outside. |

| I think it's more abusive to make a dog hold it for hours until you can take her out or force her to go out in bad weather. Since you live in a high rise apartment, it is very practical. Using a pee pad doesn't mean your dog will never go outside. You can still take her for walks, stroller rides, meetups, whatever. A pee pad just gives her an indoor toilet. Ask your friend if she likes indoor plumbing or would prefer to use an outhouse in the middle of the night. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | 3 of mine use wee wee pads and they are all adults. I took in Nikki in February and he was use to being walked outside to potty, but from the first day he started using the pads like my girls. He is around 16 years old and goes a lot so it really works out the best for all of us.

| as long as it isnt an alternative to walks and exercize, pee pads are just fine to give them an option other than to hold it. what would your friends justification of dog abuse be with using pee pads??? |

| Thanks for your opinions. I think the same thing. I heard Yorkies can have a hard time holding it and I would rather him go whenever he needs to. And he's so small he doesn't make a mess. Thanks! It's nice to hear that others have done it the same! |

| Hi Dexterandalana! She doesn't have a small dog so she doesn't really understand and she is very opinionated. She thinks that it's unnatural for them to go inside. But I think that it's far enough way from him crate and food and is keep very clean. I still take him out everyday and we go to dog parks. I just don't want him to have to hold it while I go down 15 floors in a elevator |

Speaking to a vet a couple of weeks ago about dog parts; it's one of the most filthiest areas you can take your dog too. That in her opinion is unhealthy.

| Abuse? That's absurd. Ruger is trained to go outside, and will "often" let me know when he as to go out, but I keep some wee pads at the back door and he will use those when he can't get out, or more often when I want to sleep late. |

| When I bought Harley I felt the wrath of my friends, who thought keeping a dog in the apartment was abuse. However, they didn't listen to me when I explained that he would be walked and played with more than enough for a happy life. Some people don't understand. As for the pee pads, I think it's a personal choice. I don't like pee pads, and I don't like going outside. so I use a grid system. and love it. Harley is well trained, and happy in his apartment.

| That's not animal abuse!! When it's very cold or very snowy or a bad rain storm I have my dog stay in and use a wee wee pad. He's getting older now so when I go out and overnight I keep one down for him too. |

| Of course it's not animal abuse! As LONG as they are still getting exercise and being able to get outside, etc. I think a lot of people have this perception that puppy pad trained dogs just live in the apartment 24/7 and never get outside. That, to me, is not cool. I don't personally use puppy pads, and don't think I ever would or could (Jackson refused as a puppy even) but being up so high in a NYC apartment would definitely prove difficult to potty train strictly outdoors. I just don't like pads and prefer for a dog to go outside. But like I said, in your situation, that WOULD be tough. Have you thought about those potty patch things? They're, like, grass sort of. Except not. Google and you'll see some info. I'm glad he gets to go out to dog parks and exercise still! Great socialization.

| My first yorkie was pad trained for the first year. Then she started to be an outdoor dog when we started spending winters i Florida. I now have three and wish that i pad trained all of them instead of going outside. They hate the rain and have only seen the snow once last december while we were still up north and would not poop outside!! ugg! now we maybe spending winters up north again in a couple of years and i wish they now went on pads. Taking you pup out for exercise and some fresh air would be wonderful. Otherwise, i am home during the day and i walk my dogs about 5-6 times a day, which is often. |

| Mine use pee pads plus an "outhouse" - we have a two story house with multiple decks, the deck off the kitchen is 14 x 14 and we enclosed in with chicken wire (to prevent anyone from slipping through the railing), put in a little doggie door that enters an "outhouse" (3 x 3 x 3) with an exit from that to "their" deck when they have shade and sun and plenty of fresh air..on their terms, when they want it. the outhouse has potty pads which I change daily. They have a "private" commode (so to speak) plus free outside time (though we shut the outhouse "screen door" when they leave as someone could "technically" come up to the deck and steal them when we are gone. Though we have a big back yard we also have a pool and I know there are escape holes thus I don't want them access to the back yard for their own safety. I can't imagine how someone could think using pee pads would be abuse. What's the difference if they pee on some grass or a pee pad? I know the dogs certainly don't care. |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I trained my first Yorkie, Baxter to a litter box (filled with dog litter), because our back yard was not fenced in yet, and my husband and I worked long hours. Personally, I hate the litter box, litter gets tracked everywhere! It seemed like I could never get Baxter to give it up! When Cooper came along, he did not take to the litter box, but would go on the pee pads I put under the litter box (on the areas around it). Darcy was already trained to outside, when we got her, and never took on to the pee pads. Since I am home most of the time now, they enjoy going outside to potty, but the boys will use the pad every now and then. I always make sure one is down when I leave. |
