| Crate training.., Does anyone else feel awful leaving your pup in the crate for too long? And I'm talking anything over 30 mins. I read somewhere it's best to leave them in there for several hrs at a time but I'm wondering if that makes me the bad guy... |

| Well my yorkie Cruton does not like being in the crate and even at night when we tried crating her she would cry and cry and cry until i let her out and she was fine, she is fine day and night out of the crate, but it is your decision whether you want to crate your yorkie personally I don't like crating my yorkie because I do feel bad but like I said it's your decision.

| crating I guess I feel like it depends on the age of the puppy as to how long you crate them. I crated Belle from the time we got her at three months every night as she got into everything. I got her up when she cried to go potty. I cover her crate at night and she never makes a sound until she hears me in the morning. During the day when we go somewhere we crate her so we know she's safe. I never crate her more than 4 hours at a time. |

| Personally, I like the crate. Merlin is in there overnight; he is content, never cries until he hears me in the morning and it takes me too long until I'm ready... And I found it very good for potty training. It's nice to get up in the morning and no surprises waiting in the living room. I think it's like with kids; there is a lot they don't like but Mum knows better and wants them to be safe. If I would have given in every time my skin kids were complaining...oh boy!

Senior Yorkie Talker | I only crate at night. I can tell you housebreaking is not going very well. When I take him out in the morining it fine. After that, we've had many accidents. Tried the half hour after eating, just want to play or eat acorns! |

| I crated Lucy when she was little - both for housetraining and for her own safety when I was not home. She ate everything - electrical cords, you name it. At night, she slept in my bed so was not crated at night. Now that we have moved to a new house that is ALL carpeted - we've been crating the dogs when we leave. I feel bad - but this is also a strange house and Lucy is again chewing on things that are bad for her. I get up at 5:30 am and take them for a good morning walk; then they are crated from about 7:45 until Noon - when I come home and take them for another walk. My son get home at 2:30 and then they are free! Ringo looks so sad - like why are you crating me - I'm TOO RESPONSIBLE for this. But as soon as my elderly father moves in - he can let them in and out and hopefully they won't have to be crated.

| We have crated at night from the very beginning. Cooper sleeps in his crate from 1030-6 every night. During the day while we are at work he is in a playyard ( 3x6). That is his routine and it works quite well. The best part is when we travel these two things go with us ( HIS little piece of home) , so nothing changes. He sleeps in his same bed, and when we go out in the daytime he goes in his playyard. Don't feel guilty, it is for their own good. I would worry all day about him getting into something he shouldn't , expecially if we are not in our home. |

| I crate as well. From the first night we had Winnie she was in her crate. She didn't care for it at first but now she prefers her crate when she is home alone. At night we put a blanket over the bed otherwise I don't think she sleeps well. During the day we move the crate to the living room and don't cover it. She is in there for around 5 hours at a time. I feel bad too especially when I have to go somewhere after work and she in it more. I would hate to have most of my life in a 2 foot by 1 foot space. It's really just keeping her safe. She's pretty investigative! |

| I used the crate a bit when Harley was little, he spent every night in it, and after the second night home at 9 1/2 weeks, he would sleep for 8 hours (amazing bladder for a little pup). He used to sleep in his crate every night until about a month ago. When we're gone during the day time I made him a little run with the crate and the hallway. He's 10 months old and now we're moving into a new apartment, I intend on giving him almost free run of the whole place, at night he has his own room, with a crate, our spare bed and all his toys and blankets. Harley did well with his potty training, as we used a grid system and put it in his play area. Now he knows where to find it... so I guess the crate was a huge part of him being house broke so early... I just hated locking him up. I feel better with him having space like in an expen or hallway.
