I crated Lucy when she was little - both for housetraining and for her own safety when I was not home. She ate everything - electrical cords, you name it. At night, she slept in my bed so was not crated at night.
Now that we have moved to a new house that is ALL carpeted - we've been crating the dogs when we leave. I feel bad - but this is also a strange house and Lucy is again chewing on things that are bad for her.
I get up at 5:30 am and take them for a good morning walk; then they are crated from about 7:45 until Noon - when I come home and take them for another walk. My son get home at 2:30 and then they are free! Ringo looks so sad - like why are you crating me - I'm TOO RESPONSIBLE for this.
But as soon as my elderly father moves in - he can let them in and out and hopefully they won't have to be crated.
