| Am I a bad mommy? Okay all, Toby is 14 weeks old, I was training him to go outside, and he was doing really good, but it has gotten really cold really fast here, and I have been slacking on taking him outside like I know I should at his age. We have a puppy pad down for him, he uses this 98% of the time if I don't take him out in time, so I am happy about that. We were planning on building him a gate of outside so we can eventually just let him out when he has to go. He gives us no warning when he has to go, but we make him scratch his paws on the door and say outside before we take him out so he will learn that is what he needs to do for us to let him out. The reason why I don't want to take him out is because all he wants to do is play-with/eat the leaves, sticks, mulch, berries, and bugs and I have to change every time I take him out, because I get all comfy and stuff when I am at home. (I know I am selfish. ) I do tell him go potty, and I believe that he is beginning to understand this. I feel really bad, I know I should be taking him out, but it would be really nice to have him trained to do both until he learns to let me know if he has to go out. But will he ever learn to go outside if I keep a puppy pad down for him, or am I just really confusing him?

| my idea this is a good question. i am the same way. i think that if you train him to trya nd use the potty pad until he gets older that is fine. i take Dollar out as much as possible and when I do take him out I set him on the potty pad so that he associates going outside with the potty pad and that way if he does go inside he will use the potty pad! Does that make since. I sometimes wonder if I am confusing Dollar but each dog is different. All we can so is be persistant in our methods and not keep swicthing things up. they will learn.

| I do the same thing with Deb. Not only do I not like the cold. Deb hates it too!! SHe is doing really well with using her pads...and she goes outside too wen we take her. The only problem is that she uses her pad when she is in her xpen....and when she is out and about we try to take her out frequently...but I dont think she associates going to the pad any other time than when she is in the xpen. Will she ever go to the pad when she is out and about playing? Poor Deb...I am sure I have confused her thoroughly!!!

| Louie is trained both outside and inside on wee-wee pads and it has really worked well for us. I don't know how people do it. We live in NY where it snows a lot, I don't know how people take yorkies out in the snow and when it pours, he wouldn't want to go pee, he would try to catch the rain drops. I don't think Louie is confused at all. I find the wee-wee pads to be so convenient...if only he didn't miss it as much as he normally does. I use to tell Louie when I would take him outside, "let's go pee-pee outside" and get his harness and leash and when it rained I say "go pee-pee on your wee-wee." He's been doing very well.

A couple of tips. First, instead of scratching the door, how about hanging a bell from the door knob and teaching him to ring that? The reason I suggest this is that I doubt you really want him scratching the door endlessly when you aren't there to take him out. The frustrating part is that once they learn that bell (or scratching) = going out, they start wanting out all the time without always going potty. That's okay! Stick with it, they will soon figure it out. I always treat for going potty outside. I don't treat for pottying on the paper but I also don't act disappointed when he does. I save that for accidents (which I'm happy to say are pretty rare now). Be sure you quietly say "Go potty" or whatever your cue is, while he is pottying so he knows that's what you mean. Later you can use it as a command. I'm also impatient with the pottying. I didn't want to stand out there for long and so I didn't. If he hadn't gone in a couple of minutes, I'd go back inside and let him stay out. This means that he's lost the treat for not pottying quickly but, besides that, he's not punished for it. You could also try keeping him on a leash when you take him potty so that he can't go exploring. In other words, I think you are doing fine. They say it takes longer to train them to potty both inside and out, but it definitely can be done! Last edited by FirstYorkie; 10-28-2005 at 01:21 AM. | |

| I have a bell for him but he is way too short to reach it so it makes it difficult to teach him right now. Although I have tried. I eventually I want him trained to go strictly outside except for when it is really bad outside. (pooring rain, blizzard) Am I doing this right.

| I love the bell idea! I am going to have to give that a shot! Wosie (4 months) goes on newspaper at night (and sometimes during the day because Daddy is not that great at potty training), and I treat for going outdoors. She knows what "go pee pee" means, and can now squeeze out a few drops just to get the treat! I too am impatient with outside time, but reluctant to leave her out because we have too many hawks and I don't want to have her be hawk-bait. So if she doesn't go when I ask her to, I give her only 5 more minutes, and then we go back in. Then I have to watch her like a hawk, lol. I am working on "go poop", and sometimes she gets it, but most of the time she does her poops in the middle of the night, so that one is going to be harder to train. Good luck!

| I got Toki trained on the wee wee pads then outside. So now when I don't open the door he will use those pads if he really needs to. But make sure you focus on one before you go on the next |
