| Potty training...I am lost, what to do??? My Mom has had her little Yorkie for about a month. Her name is Missy May!! She is having so much trouble potty training her. She wants to train her to go on pads inside. She has a pen that she keeps her in with pads, but she doesn't go while in the pen. She will keep her in there for hours and Missy May never uses them, but soon as she lets her out she goes on the carpet. She has tried taking her straight from the pen, outside to see if she will potty there and still nothing. She hates leaving her in the pen for so long. Also she noticed Missy May using the potty in front of the refrigerator so she put a pad down there. She did go pee on it 3 times yesterday but then today she wouldn't. She also has never poohed on the pad. It's like Missy May is holding everything in until she gets out of her pen!!!! Does anyone have any helpful tips for us!! Thanks so much for any ideas!! |

Missing Yoshi Everyday! Donating Member | most dogs will not go where they sleep...so maybe she is associating the pen with her den..most puppies follow the same routine...house training has to be consistent. As they get older they are more likely to be able to hold it in later. 1) First thing when they wake up. 2) After each meal and drink (take outside or to pee pad 5 minutes or so depending on each dog - wait 10-20 minutes if they do not go then put back in crate or pen and repeat 5 minutes later) 3) After each play period (same as above) 4) After each nap 5) Before bedtime. Must develop a routine schedule and as they get older they will let you know..hope that helps!

| My girls use pee pads too. I work during the day so we used a larger crate for potty training. In the back I put a pee pad and in the front was her bed, food and water. This way she could go potty if needed and still have a place to sleep and eat. It was explained to me like this---These are babies. Even skin babies get lost in a house. If you are letting her have free run of your house when she is out, she will get lost. They are so cute it is hard to put them back in the crate when you are home. When she is out you have to watch her just like a skin babies. Try to keep her in just one room when she is out that way she will learn where the pad is. As she gets bigger you can let her into more rooms and move the pad where you want her to go. My girls are 6 and 2. I have two pads for them to use. One in the den and one in the bath room. Sydney likes to go in private. Just one last thought. My breeder had Emmie almost pee pad trained at 12 weeks. When I asked her about it she said that when they used the pad she gave out cheerios. To this day Emmie will come tell you that she used the pad. Emmie will even tell on Sydney just to get the cheerios. We only use the crate when traveling now.

| Thanks Thanks for the tips, Lelemommy, it sounds like my mom has her pen set up the same way as you do. There are times she has to leave her in there for awhile when she is gone, but Missy May doesn't potty in there! I wonder if my Mom should let Missy May sleep in a crate and in the morning when she wakes put her in the pen. Just a thought I had! I will tell my Mom about the cheerio thing for sure! Thanks again! |

| Hi! I was having the same problem with my Cricket. She would pee and poo every where put on her pads. I found the great treat called Ranch Rewards All-Natural Freeze-Dried Dog Treats from Petedge.com and they work great. It took about a week and now she comes and gets me to show me she went potty on her pad so she can get a treat. They are a little big so I just cut the treats up into smaller pieces for her. |

| Problems getting her to pee. Let me start off by saying that my little girl, Bella, will not use the pads. She bites them and tears them up. Any paper she finds, she tears it up. So I tried taking her outside. Nothing! She will wait till she is inside. I have a box for her to go potty in and I put a green rug (since she tears the paper up), but she still won't go. I don't know what to do. |

what i use is the quilted disposable pee pads...you can get them at walgreen...they sell them for $10 for a 50/pk...mine used to shred the other kind and i couldn't stand it especially when it was wet...because the filling of the pads are like wet diapers and when shredded it was disgusting...where as these quilted ones when attempted to be shred tears into 2 pieces...the top quilted paper and the bottom backing...mine also goes outside

| Although some pads are impregnated with an odor, I still purchased a spray, that when sprayed on the pee pad, encourages the puppy to go there. Have you tried it? |

| If you get an x-pen you can attach her crate to it and put the pad in the x-pen part. That way she can come out of her crate and use the pad. They do not like to potty where they sleep.

| It took me couple months to train Magnus to go on the pad consistently but it's finally happened. It took me so long b/c of couple of reasons. Part of it was consistency. During the day, he's with my mom and she wasn't able to be as consistent with him. Another issue was that the house was sort of big so he just went anywhere he felt like. Now, here are the things I've done to correct the problems. 1. I put his crate inside the pen so that would be his "den" and his pee pad far away as possible from his den within the pen. 2. I blocked off certain parts of the house so he's not able to wonder around everywhere and it's easier to keep an eye on him. I think I read that it's better to keep the puppy contained to a smaller area until s/he's trained. (I basically built a gate for the hallway that leads to the sitting/dining room) 3. I put pee pads in every room he's allowed to roam around. (Kitchen, Living room, Hallway) And I spray that potty training aid on the pee pad. (I've read a lot of reviews saying it doesn't work but it worked for me so.. *shrug*) 4. I also put a pad holder on all of them. (I actually just made them since I didn't want to cough up 15 bucks each) But this is only if your baby has a habit of tearing them up when bored or any other reason. 5. This will probably sound... silly/weird but I made a L shaped mini wall. I made two so he can use one or the other when we have company and have to move one of his bathroom. One thing I noticed about Magnus is that he's okay peeing when you're watching but he absolutely hates being looked at when he goes poo. Hence the L shaped mini wall for his privacy. LOL And he's been "accident free" for the past two week. I had 2 pads in the kitchen but took 1 away about a week ago. I will take away the other 1 in the kitchen as well eventually. Sorry for rambling. I had a hard time training Magnus at first so I'm very familiar with that frustration. LOL Good luck to you and feel free to ask any question! |

| I expect potty training to take about 6-8 months. I use treats. Also, when the dog is in the act of going say something like "POTTY" so the dog learns to associate the word with the deed. The big trouble I had with my yorkie mix is that she would get distracted outside and hold it until she goes back in. I have a doggie door and a few times she actually ran in, went potty, then came back out. I At 6 1/2 months she's 95% house broken. My second dog is 3 months, and crate trained. He's got it down already! Spike was doing good, I'd here her go out the doggie door in the middle of the night. but we had a bad storm and she started going in the house again for a few weeks. it takes time, lucky for me I have stained concrete floors, and they are a breeze to clean. Limiting the area the dog can be in helps a lot. as does keeping a close eye and being ready to take it outside at any and all warning signs. |

| I found the spray. Lets see how it works I found the spray at Wal-mart that helps them to potty in a box. I sprayed it in her box. Now I'm gonna see if that helps. I'll keep you posted. |

| Me too and at my wits end!! My Ricky came to me from a breeder who had him puppy pad trained at 8 wks and now he goes strictly outside and comes and gets me to go, all for his treats. Daisy on the other hand came from a woman who didn't know anything about breeding or training or anything. So spray doesn't work or the pads with the scent she will pee sometimes on the pad and everywhere else on the floor, will never poop on the pad just on the floor and could care less about treats. I will say consistency is a problem since I am at work but when I come home I take her out she won't go, the minute I come back in she goes but not on pad. I will try the crate and play yard suggestion. Will keep u up to date. |
