Here is my problem and I need advice. I was doing much better with my 4 1/2 month old baby taking her outside to potty and giving her a treat. She was even asking to go out by going to the door. BUT I also woould give her a treat if she was getting too far away and too close to the street. (We live on 2 acres) and I would say "Come" and she would come and get her treat. Well, now she ask to go out several times a day just to run away from me until I call her back. You should see her. If she does not need to go potty but she wants a treat she will ask to go out and run like hell until I call her back and she runs in the house to the kitchen to get her treat. Now we are going out several times an hour just for this trick she does! How do I break this habbit? I want her to always come to me so I do not feel like I can stop giving her treat. Help.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh, them Yorkies are too much. My 6 month old does the same they use the potty pad so evertime she goes on the potty pad she gets a treat so when I'm looking at her she runs to the potty pad & she squats like she is going then stops & all you see is just a small drop, & then she runs to the cabinet where the treats are. I guess I'm not the only one with a sneaky baby. I don't what to suggest, except maybe to put her on a leash when you take her out. I'm sure someone from YT will have a great suggestion. I'm still a new Yorkie Mom. Good Luck!!

I'm convinced they are smarter than all of us put together! Give in and build a fence!

I know - I know. I'm no help at all, but I thought maybe it would make you happier to know you are not alone.

I agree you are not alone. I trained my yorkie to ring a bell to go outside. We have a fenced in yard but I usually go with her. She wants a treat when we go back in. Sometimes she will ring the bell, run around the corner and run back real fast without doing a thing, but will beg for the treat. I give her a shake of the head and no treat. I love the bell but she has hit that bell 20 times in a hour and I swear its to just see how many times she can make me get up.

Give her a treat everytimes she goes potty but do not give her a treat everytime she come to you. That way she will not be expecting a treat everytime she comes to you.

i never gave treats for going potty, only lots of praise. and luckily, he's a boy so when he runs out he has to stop and sniff eeeeeeverything.
now, i make sure i tell him to stay and if he gets out i say firmly "Get in the House!" this is my coming home routine tho and he knows after i look at the carpet and put my stuff down he gets praise also.

i have only used treats to get him to sit.

MY YORKIE DOES THAT TOO. She goes to her pad and then she squats and does her business and then whe whines and we go see what it is and there is a little tiny drop.

Yorkies are so smart. I dont give Gucci treats for going potty, well sometimes. I mopstly praise her.

I was not having any luck training her until I started using treats. Then she suddenly started doing as I asked her so I do not feel like I can stop giving treats or we may have a backslide on her acheivements. I am mostly worried that she will fill up on treats and not get her proper nutrician. I have started to give a tiny amount for coming to me and a little bit more for pottying.

Last night she pooped in her bed and she is in a playpen and can get out and go on her pee pads. I had gotten her first groom that day. Do you think she was angry at me for leaving her at petsmart for 4 hours?

Your Yorkie is becoming independant and showing that little Yorkie side of stubborness, LOL.

Maybe have a very long lead, like really long. And when you are outside with her and she goes far, continue to call her back once. If she ignores you, call her again and pull her in w/ the lead. Praise praise and more praise.

I've heard this training technique works very well.

I would limit the times she gets to go out front. You don't want anything to happen to her. She's too smart for her own good.

I dont give treats for going potty. We just tell them they are good.

I agree with the suggestion of a very long leash. She will soon be at the age when she starts occasionally refusing commands like "come". She'll then be in a very dangerous situation.

If she only goes out on a leash, I bet she'll stop asking to go out for no reason.

I'm with you - I wouldn't stop rewarding "come": it's such an important command!

They are smart indeed. Do you work on "come" at any other time and in any other place? I would vary the training and teach more behaviors as well as not give the treat EVERY time. She eventually needs to respond to the command without the expectation of a treat, but just bcause she wants to "do the right thing" and please you.

My Princess Chai has learned to "twirl" and she will just start twirling if she wants a treat.....LOL....it is so funny. My westie will do the very last trick I taught her over and over until i give her a treat!!! They are so cute, it is hard to resist giving in to them when they do this.
