Puppy Pads VS Going Outside???

I read somewhere on here one day that there are so many different ways that people do things with their little ones that you can sometimes become overwhelmed with it all, which is how I'm starting to feel about the house training!

Drake will pee on the pad if I take him there right when he gets out of his playpen but if he's out and about playing, he will just stop and pee wherever he first feels the urge and if I can catch him in time, I tell him "no" and take him to the pad! Usually, he won't go when I do that....hubby says by me anxiously saying "no" that I've scared the urge out of him! lol I'm starting to feel like maybe he thinks peeing on the pad is just like peeing on the floor!

Anyway, I was just wanting to kind of take a survey and see whether most people use the puppy pad method or taking them outside! I'm wondering which method is easier for "mom" and/or which method is easier for the puppy itself!

I live in Missouri and the weather is kind of crazy here, and we definitely have all 4 seasons, so my original plan was to use puppy pads only!

Both our dogs go inside and outside.

We are still traing chelsey maltese 6 months now as she will only poo in her crate.. Who knows why.
but she does pee, out side and inside.

chester yorkie is 2 1/2 and does both now.

I was just curious where you live. I live 22 miles west of joplin. Well I have heard to use the wizdog becuase it is easier. even if you will be gone a long time during the day. But I am not sure, there are a lot of people on here that have had experience and are very smart. Godd luck.

Our Toto is totally trained to the wee wee pad but if we are walking her and she has an urge, we also let her go outside. We haven't noticed that it has impaired her inside training at all. The only thing ... if we are on the sidewalk [and we usually are] she doesn't bother to jump over to the grass ... she just goes right there!! We never disturb her ... just clean up after her! We are in Colorado and are so thankful that we chose the pad training. Last year we were in Missouri and it was soooo cold. I can certainly sympathize with you!

I use puppy pads..but i was wondering what the pad wizdog is?? Is it a brand of puppy pads? baby is good about peeing on the pads...unless we are in the room, then she goes in the bathroom?? Confuses me but we are tryng to keep the bathroom door closed so she doesn't have that option. But she doesn't like to poop on the pads! She's a silly girl, but oh do I love her!

Ok, Drakesmom...I'm guessing it is just a mixed cup on the choices for or against pee-pee pads, it should be whatever you find is working best with Drake. Either way though, pads or outside eliminating Im thinking that the training is all the same. A puppy cannot have free rain of the house. Crate training has worked best for Schatzie when she was real little. Then when it was play time in the house I always had her leash and harness on that way she was only allowed the length of the leash distance from me. It only takes a second for these little one's to squat and pee and I just found it easier for me to keep her leash on with me on the other end that she was.

When the pups are real young, you will feel like you have to take your pup outside or inside to the puppy pee pad every 15 minutes. And correctly so. These little one's go quite often so they need to be taken to the allowed spot for elimination quite often.

Also, it might be helpful to clean any previous potty spots Drake had left as if he can smell where he's been in those incorrect places in your home, most likely he will return.

I do promise though, it will get easier. Keep us posted on how he is doing.
Oh, and to answer your question, LOL...Schatzie uses pee pee pads...Sorry, I tend to ramble.

Schatzie sure is a cutie....what a beautiful face she has! I really shouldn't complain because Drake is doing pretty good, but you are right....they are fast and by the time you catch them squatting, it's too late!

Is there a way I can find all the posts I've made in this forum, so I can go directly to them when I want to follow up, rather than having to search for them one by one?

I'm mainly training Hercules to go outside, but it has a twist. I've mentioned this before, so sorry if you've already heard... We built a little box on our balcony and put a pee pad in it. We live on the third floor of an apartment, so it was rough running up and down the stairs all the time. Also, the balcony is right off the living room, which is where we spend most of our time with Hercules, so it works very well.

I live in Maryland, and we get all 4 seasons as well. I've found that when I take him out, he usually does his business fast and doesn't seem too cold (even though I might be sometimes). Good luck!

Carter is trained to go outside however, if I'm not home or if I'm busy, he goes on the pad near the doorway to where we exit the house for pottying. Seems as of late that he pees outside then once he's back inside a few minutes, he goes poop on the pad. Before he began that behavior though, he would only eliminate outside. I really don't mind . . . . helps to keep the yard clean that way!

Toby is trained to go on pee pee pads.... we live in an apartment complex (2nd story) and it would be tiresome to go in and out (especially with my arthritus....... gosh i feel so old saying that, im only 22 ) and the rainy weather...... he was HORRIBLE at it when we first started, im talkign CLUELESS, but he has gotten much better and only has an "accident" once in a while (usually when he is mad at us..... hmmmm....... is there a connection???)...... i tried the same method you are using .... the yell when you see them in the act, but this didnt work for me.... regardless of wether i saw him do it or not i would yell at him, i even swatted him a few times (VERY VERY LIGHTLY ON THE RUMP, ...... he gets worse then that 'swat' playing with my fiance it was jsut the act of punishment that got him doing it right) and i saw DRAMATIC improvement after this....lol.... now he even tells us if he has an accident by coming up and asking for forgiveness

I would say..... whatever works best for you, but keep in mind it took two months to train toby to where he only has accidents occasionally..... you need to evaluate youre living situation and what you are willing to do.... physically i cant climb up and down stairs every twenty minuits so i chose the pads... if you choose to let them outside you CAN NOT let them out alone (especially at night) birds and other predators have been known to carry off toy dogs, are you willing to stand out there in the cold with your dog until they go potty???? evaluate yourself and your needs and then see what you want to do with youre dog

I'M TRYING TO TEACH NEMO TO GO OUTSIDE, BUT SINCE HE IS ONLY A BABY ( 11 WEEKS) HE SLEEPS ALOT AND EVERYTIME HE GETS UP HE GOES, IT BARELY GIVES ME A OPTION TO TAKE HIM OUT, I'M ALSO TRYING THE PEEPEE PADS BUT HE JUST WON'T LOOK FOR THEM UNLESS , HE IS STARTING TO GO AND I PUT HIM THERE TO FINISH.. I was training my 3 month old Miffy to pee on newspapers but she just won't go. Today I bought puppy pads to see if it would make any difference but she still won't go. I predict more training and patience!
