| Potty Training 7 mo. old Help! We recently took down Bailey's pen and are allowing him freedom in the first floor of our home because he was doing so well with his puppy pads in his pen. Now that he is roming around he is peeing all over my white carpet and ignoring the fact that his puppy pad is in the kitchen where it always has been. I'm not sure what to do. He will go potty outside when we tell him to go and will go on his pad when I ask him if he has to go potty but as soon as I go to work there are #1 and #2 piles all over my house. Also, he has been eating at my sheetrock walls on the edges. Has anyone else had this problem? He has chewed all the way down to the metal in my wall. Distressed in WA

| I have no idea how to link my posts, but if you have water put down constantly, he will drink, then pee constantly. my friend told me that about 10m after they drink, they should go out. it helped alot. if your carpet is not new there may have been other pets who left their scent behind. that could be troublesome. try some spray with that special stuff that kills the "pee here" scent. if he is peeing on tile, put down a sock/washrag with some vinagar on it and leave until dry. yes, it will stink a bit but dogs go in the same spot and it won't smell like a urinal to him anymore. about the sheetrock i have no idea. they make some no chew spray that could help. make sure if you catch him in the act you tell him no! then give him something he can chew and praise him for chewing that. hope that helps! also, if you are going to be gone for long periods of time, don't feed him or let him have free access to water before you go. i know this sounds cruel but it helped us alot. |

| I would put the pen back up and limit his freedom while you are at work. In the "Yorkies for Dummies" book, it says they may not be ready for 100% freedom until 1 - 2 years old. puppies tend to get stressed out being alone for long periods of time. You have to build up to it. If you are going to give him freedom of one whole floor you are going to have to do it hour increments. In other words start out with leaving him alone for an hour, then 2, and so on. You have to work up to 8 - 9 hours. A puppy can feel safe in their pens and will not "act out" (which is what the defecating and urinating could be). It will also keep them from getting into trouble when they are bored. The other thing is, that your puppy is not ready to have free range until he "asks" to go potty. It's great that he will go when you ask him, but he has to get to the point where he is asking to go potty on his own or goes to the designated area on his own without you prompting him. If he is not at that point, he is definitely not house broken trustworthy. I also agree that you have to limit his food and water intake while you are not there. If the bladder and bowels are empty there will be less "piles", if any. You want your puppy to feel successful, but they cannot do it on their own. You have to ensure success and you can only do this by creating an environment that your puppy can succeed in. |

| Ladylavender is right. He is too young for the run of the house and some yorkies, not all, will always need to be limited when there isn't someone home with them during the day.

| I agree with the others that if he is pottying everywhere, he obviously isn't ready for that amount of freedom. Back to the pen! Someone on this list (wish I could give them credit!) suggested rubbing clear deoderant over inappropriate chewing surfaces. This was a suggestion worth its weight in gold! Works much better than the commerical preparations. Try it! |
