| Training an outdoor housebroken dog to use a pee pad? Hi all - I have 3 yorkies: 1 adult and 2 pups. My pups are really great with using a pee pad. My breeder had already started their training for me so I really havent had much training to do for them in that department....as long as I keep their roaming area small What I've been trying to is to train my adult yorkie to pee pad which has been trained to go outside for that last year and a 1/2 since we brought her home. Have any of you tried to pee pad train an already outside trained dog? Any tips? I've started to try and get her to use the pee pad but she absolutely refuses to go on it since she has been told not to go in the house for 1 1/2 years now i thought seeing the puppies use the pee pads would help her and I even got her really excited when her bladder was full so she would leak a little and wiped it up with the pad so she could smell her own scent...but no luck so far. I'm not really sure what to try next. All I know is that I would really like to get her trained indoors so I don;t have to shovel for her to go pee this winter any suggestions? Thanks!

| Hi Guess from ,my perspective I think you are so lucky your dog go's outside only cause it has taken me quite some time to get my two year old to do it outside all the time He will still pee on a pad if it rains etc. I am not sure how to retrain her. I guess maybe just dont let her out when she wants to go out and take her to the pad or take a pad outside for her to go on and bring it in? My concern is that she will get confused and maybe start to pee anywhere like your rug etc. Hope you are sure about it as it would maybe be easier to let the pups learn from her to go outside? Anyway good luck with it |

| How does she let you know that she has to go? Does she go to a door, or a doggy door? You might try putting the pad right by the door she goes out at, and wipe some of her urine from outside on the pad. You could also put a little grass on the pad. When she does start using it, praise praise praisse, just like you would when training a new puppy. She won't know its ok to go on it unless you show her its a good deed by rewarding her I recently re-trained my 14 year old Maltese to go from outside only, to using pads when I am not here (it took some time though, a few months) she can't hold her bladder too long any more, so I've had to order some diapers too, but thats another subject. The point is, it can be done, but it takes patience and praise and reward

| You will want to limit her run of the house to just bare floor area such as the kitchen. The use of a crate isn't a bad idea, either. Start a routine with her and then stick to it. (Set time for food and water, play time, potty time). |

| Thanks so much for the ideas guys! The one thing I haven't tried to the grass on the pad by the door. I've been leaving a pad (with a little of her pee on it) by the door that she goes out already. She is just so well trained to not go in the house that this is hard for her to change mentally. I would so much rather her go on the pee pad so that i don;t have to shovel during a blizzard this year :-) I hope the grass droppings work! Maybe I will try to limit her area for a while. I just hate to do that since she's had the free reign of the house for so long. i hope she doesn't thing she is gett getting punished she might feel like one of the puppies thanks again!
