YT Addict | Bell Training to go Potty I want to try bell training for Harley to go potty. He now whines when he wants to go out but sometimes he whines just to be whining or for attention so I need some other way of knowing when he needs to go out. My question is where can you find the bells that attach to the wall? |

| You can use any type of bell. You can get them any size at any department store. I got mine at Wal-Mart in the craft section. I took a cord, attached the bell and put it by a hook by the side of the door. I didn't want it actually hanging on the door, sometimes it stays open during the hot weather. I also got the bell door hanger thing that they have out at Christmas time..it has 3 large bells on it. You can use almost anything you can imagine to hang bells on..... I started ringing it every time we went outside...and use my "word". Then after a few times...showed them how to ring it with the paw...Chloe' acutally uses her nose. I love it!! Chloe' uses it everytime....Myah doesn't. She just waits till Chloe' goes out and goes with her. I don't think she likes the bells..... |

| We hang a bell from the top of our door down to about 1 foot off the ground. Just a tiny one. And its so cute, Bella will ring the bell, and come in and stare at you. If you don't get up, its back to the bell, and then back into the room to stare you down. We have found tho, that she will ring the bell just to go outside for a walk too..haha But shes actually pretty smart. We will say "ring the bell" before we go out every time and once she rings it, we open the door. Now if she could learn to play fetch lol Instead of taking the ball and laying down. |

YT Addict | I think the bell thing is a great idea. I'm hoping it will work for Harley. What do you if you take them to someone else's house? Harley has stayed with my mom before when I go out of town. Do you take the bell with you? |

| My Chloe also rings a bell to go outside. I strung three miniature cow bells on a ribbon and hung them on the door knob. The first three or fourth times I rang the bells and said, "Let's go outside!" in a excited voice as we headed out. After that I would point to the bells while saying it and would tell her to ring the bells. She caught on quickly and now drives me nuts with the bells because she LOVES going outside. Just a word of caution though... One site that I read while researching this method noted that jingle bells of any size should NOT be used because the puppy could get its toenail caught in the bell and possibly pull it out. With this setup, you can easily take the bells with you when you travel or just make a second set to keep in a travel bag so you don't forget it. Good luck! This is a really neat way for your baby to let you know when he/she wants to go out. |

| Hi, new to YT, Hi to all, 2 wks ago I got a 5 yrs old yorkie, Jasper is great. He goes potty outside 95% but a few mishaps in the house, a some on the pee pad some not. Do you think I can retrain him to use the bell? I am the 3 owner, his second owner only had him 2 weeks and needed to give him up because he was just diagnoised with cancer and would not be able to give Jasper the time and love. Jasper and I am my husband are still getting to know us and we him, he is very attached in such a short time. I just want him to be a good boy and be able to take him into other homes and not worry about a mishap. Thank you in advance Pamela722 |

| Bell training I use a tap bell (like a bell hop bell) that I got at Staples. I just sit it on the floor by the door. You can take this anywhere and sit it anywhere that is convenient. I think any age dog can be trained this way. It might take longer with an older dog, but they can be taught. |

| I've used the jingle bells for 5 years now, and never had a problem with them getting their nails stuck. I never even thought of that problem. Chloe' uses her nose/head to ring the bell. I guess it depends on how they ring the bell. The cow type bells would be great...but we don't have them around here. I think any bell would work as long as you teach them how to ring it......... |

| I bought the miniature cow bells at an arts & crafts store (i.e. Michaels, Crafts Etc., Hobby Lobby, etc.). You can order them online at craftsetc.com. Just do a search for "bell." I thought about using the bellhop bell, but I already had the bells and ribbon, so I just made that. At the time I was searching, I saw some websites that sold the premade bell hangers. Also, some suggestions I found were to use jingle bells, but put them up high on the ribbon where the puppy could not reach them and put something else at the bottom that the puppy could paw or nudge. Yorkies are super smart and I think even older dogs can learn to ring the bell. Good luck! |
