Need a bit of help with Potty situation please. Here my situation, I have an 10 month old male. So far he is potty pad trained but only to a certain area. He is constant as long as he is gated and only has access to my bedroom, a large hallway, and the bathroom. He sleeps on my bed and will hop off at night to go potty on the pad so he is completely trained there. I've read to slowly increase the area but it's not working. As soon as I increase the area to include my living room, he starts to mark the stairs and pees on the carpet out there. He will not go to the hallway to pee on the pad even though its right there. I've been correcting him, "bad boy!" and picking him up and taking him to the potty pad but he doesn't seem to understand. He is a drinker and will pee in small fast amounts frequently. So he doesn't have to go anymore when I put him on the pad. Anyone have any suggestions for me? I've been thinking about trying to train him to go outside, maybe that'll stop him from going inside but he pees so frequently I'm not sure if that'll work. Worst case scenario I use a belly band when he's out of his area? Anyways thanks in advance for any input.

Is he neutered? Male dogs that are not neutered like to mark. Even sometimes after they are neutered, they still mark. It may still be too early to let him have access to another area. Once you introduce him to another area you have to keep him tethered to you just like you would when you first start potty training. Once he starts sniffing you take him to his spot. Also, make sure you take him potty before he goes into the new room, and then take him out to go potty again after 30 min or so. Hope this helps some.

Actually he is not neutered. He is my only dog and is completely indoor, except for walks and outings with me. So I always figured he doesn't need to be neutered unless I get a girl dog. Do you think he'll stop though if I got him neutered? I'll try the tethered thing but he goes very fast. lol he is a very short boy so he is constantly sniffing the ground. I only notice he is about to pee when he stops all of a sudden and lefts his leg.

I'm not an expert on male dogs, but I do know that when they are neutered that it is suppose to make them stop marking. But it is not a 100% guarantee that it will stop your dog from marking. I've read where people got their dog neutered, but it did not completely stop the marking, but it did help. Do a search on here for 'marking' and you will come up with a lot of threads on it. I've only been around female dogs. We just got our first male. He is 10 weeks old, so we will be going through this also.

I suspect the places that he goes have already been "gone" on...I absolutely, positively could not get Apple housebroken, until I took up the carpet in the livingroom/dining room, and put down laminate floor....Apple was also going nicely, in the kitchen, where she was gated, while I was at work.....Within two weeks, she was completely housebroken....However, I decided, at this time, to also train her outside...I think the problem is, that no matter what you may use to get rid of the residue of urine, nothing really takes it all out, so there is always the temptation (probably from the carpet pad)...I know some people seem to have success w/"used" carpet, but I didn't...Btw, I do rush home, on my lunch hr. and let her out...So far, the longest I've left her is 7 hrs....She is 11 months old and weighs between 4 1/2 - 5 lbs., so I'm thinking that's about the longest I can let her go, for right now...

put blankets down over your carpets in the L room!! it works so much better than trying to use the cleaners on the carpet and you might be missing some. first advice, get him neutered, that may stop the marking altogether and solve the whole issue!! secondly: i read somewhere that if i dog doesn't learn to be in a room with you and the "pack" they will think it's okay to pee there because that's not the den. you have to get him used to your living room with the whole family in there and around him and watching him so he knows that the pack uses that room and it's also off limits for a pee. always use enzyme cleaners when he does pee on something to get the smell out so he wont' remark the area and lastly try the blankets over you carpet, get some at a garage sale or thrift store. you can easily spray them with enzyme and machine wash them to get the whole smell out and it totally saves your carpet. big comforters are not easy for the pee to soak through so the carpet stays dry and you can clean up easier in training. good luck

I suspect you are completely right Sweet Apple. He tends to go near the staircase and around the dinning table set. If I can not get him to completely trained though I guess he can only leave his area with a belly band on and must be gated again when no one is home. I had hope though that I will eventually be able to just let him have free run of the whole house. | |

i might help get our scent in there or something. he needs to know that's a family room too...and the blankets work like a charm...but the neutering would be the thing that should stop all marking from him. after all you wouldn't want him to claim grandma's leg next time
