| Question for those who Crate Trained! This is my first thread on these forums and had a quick question for everyone who has crate trained their Yorkies. My gf and I bought Nano last week and he has been pretty fun and great to be around. He's a Morkie and since I couldn't find a MorkieTalk.com I figured this would do We have been doing some crate training but couldn't decide which crate was best to use for him overnight and when we're gone for a couple hours. We have both a large wire framed crate with divider so the are is just big enough for him to stand up, turn and lay down, but it's fairly high so he could jump up on the cage and cry when he's starting his pre-sleep whining. We also have the Kennel Cab which is obviously just the right size for him since he's only 10 weeks and he can't jump in this one but can move around just enough like the other one. Which one has worked for you? What other tips do you have for crate training them? |

| I have used both the wired crates and the travel crates. I think the smaller one is fine to crate train. The bigger the crate, the more chances of puppy peeing in the crate.

| Ou hould give him a treat either when he goes in or comes out so he won't think being in the crate is a bad thing |

| We've been doing that. Just trying to get him use to at least one of them. Any more opinions?

| I'd probably go with the crate you intend to use as he grows, and keep it in a consistent location. Make the crate as positive a place as you can. Penny is crate trained. I feed her in the crate, give her cookies in the crate, keep her favorite toys in the crate so she can retrieve them from there when she wants to play... she still doesn't really *like* being put in there, but she tolerates it well enough.

| I used a Kennel Cab with Rupert. Though I would really say I kennel trained him, though I think it did help with his potty training. Though he ended up using his crate for the bathroom and I would have to wash him off every other day. Though now we have a pretty good schedule going, and he doesnt spend any time in his crate at all. I only had him in there to keep my Apartment clean, but I had to clean the Kennel just as much. He is a free roamer now, he will be 14 weeks tomorrow, got him at 11 weeksish. He doesnt like bathes, and every time he messed his crate he got one, so I bet that helped out with his training. Also, I never punished him with the crate, and when I slept, I had him right next to me, if he would wine I would hold my arm down, or stick my fingers in the gate so he knew i was there, and it seemed to work and he would go back to sleep. Though it wasnt much of a problem. But I'm not expert by any means, just how things workd for me. |

| I am new to the crate training but I can tell you it works great for Lexi. I purchased a wire crate (pink of course) and put it under the bar in the breakfast nook which is in the kitchen where all the action is. It stays there all the time and she is in it about maybe 2-5 hours out of the day besides at night. If I am home she is out. She has had no accidents in two days which isn't bad because we started the crate training Friday! I keep Lexi on a schedule and so far so good. She is six months old which seems to be the magic age. Good luck. |

| Thanks for the tips guys! Unfortunately, Nano was diagnosed with Giardia, but has no symptoms. Going to try to avoid babying him as much as possible as long as his stools are still firm.

| Well it's 330am and I'm quite tired from our 2nd night of ignoring him in his crate. Brit put him inside at around 1130pm and kind of passed out in the other room. So I figured she would be waking up a couple hours later to take him to the bathroom, which at the same time, I was falling asleep from a nasty headache I acquired earlier in the afternoon. 4 hours went by and I woke up (9 minutes ago) and Brit wanted me to check on him. I kind of was upset realizing how late it was so I went into the master bedroom where he is setup with the cloth over the crate and found a few poops OUTSIDE of the crate again. He somehow aims outside of the wire frame and poops land on the outside of the crate (luckily), but now I'm worried his wire crate is too large for him, or he has some type of separation anxiety that is making him poop when no one comes to his aid. Mind you, that he has done this the last time we ignored him and left him in the crate for over 3 hours (at 10 weeks he probably should be taken out ever 2-2.5 hours) and now I'm more frustrated since he apparently has Giardia, but no symptoms of it. Should we try the smaller kennel cab?
