YT Addict | Walking issues Last year Emmett never had any trouble walking on his leash. Recently when I get his leash out he becomes really excited... i mean he really freaks out. When I finally get it on him he bites the leash and will not let go. When we walk he carries it in his mouth and continues to gnaw on it like a crazy dog. Normally he is very well behaved. What can I do to stop this behavior? I am about to take him for a walk so I will post a video of my problem.

| This is an Alpha dog issue. You need to make him sit before you put on his halter and leash. Wait for him to be calm. If he has a burst of uncontrolled excitement, you must stop and start over. Only work with him when he is calm. The first day will be the worst, bc he won't have a clue as to what you're trying to acheive. Allow plenty of time. After you do this, go to the door to go out. If he is excited, make him sit, when he is calm, tell him Good Boy, then proceed. Do this in steps. When he gets the leash in his mouth, do the 'Ah,Ah' or whatever word or sound you use to get his attention, and get the leash repositioned. Do not proceed when the leash is in his mouth or when he is acting crazy. Only proceed when he does what you want, calmly. Remember to reward him when he does good, either verbally, or with food or both. Be consistant and you'll have this under control within a week or sooner. Sounds like he really, really, really enjoys going for walks. It takes me almost 1/2 hour to get a halter and leash on Peek A Boo. He bites the halter, mouths my hands, grabs the leash, grabs Tinkerbell's halter etc. He's a nut job. I'm tired and we haven't been for our walk yet! He is getting better though.

| I agree, Don't be pulling him or be tugging with him with the leash Say NO! and wait for him to calm down don't take him out until he is calm If he does this when he is outside say NO! and stop ignore him until he stops doing this and then and only then do you move on

| My 3 years old acted like of like that. He used to walk around the block happily and in a sudden he was scared to walk out side. As soon as we reached the pavement in front of the house, he would lay down. Everytime he did that I would pull the leash gently toward the direction I liked to go then waited until he moved. So we made about 2 feet in 15 minutes but at the end he gave up and started to walk with me again. He is much better now and we also got an 6 month old as our addition. The little one helps reinforce the pack environment. |
