| Need help training 10 week old yorkie male. We just purchased our 10 week old pure bred yorkie Monday. He isn't potty trained. We put potty pads down and he goes pee on them but more often then we'd like chooses to pee around the house. =[ to top it off he chooses to not even try to go poop on the potty pads. I understand he's young so it will take time but it's my first time potty training none the less even training a puppy or dog so I NEED HELP!! He's only a pound right now and will grow no bigger then 3 pounds so getting him to pee outside isn't an option especially since he hasn't even stepped foot outside EVERRR! PLEASE HELP. |

| Just because he's tiny doesn't mean he can't go outside. As long as he's got all of his shots and you're supervising, I don't see a problem with it. I never understood that logic, lol, he's still a dog! And ya never know how big he may get! I've read stories on here of people who picked the smallest in the litter and they ended up being over 5 pounds, etc and sometimes bigger. But anyways, yeah 10 weeks is young. Jackson's 5 months and I would say he's 98% potty trained. Yorkies are known to take up to a year to potty train. You just have to be very consistent, keep them on the same schedule every day, they will always have to go after drinking water or eating food. Never take your eye off of him. Keep him in a confined area. Treat and praise everytime he goes where he's supposed to. There's a really good thread on here somewhere about potty training and I can't find it. If you go to "Search" you can type in potty training and I'm sure you'll find a lot!

| Thanks for the info. We live in Texas and right now it's cold as hell so I wouldn't want him to go outside even if he could it's like 45 degrees out and rainy. In the summer I wouldn't have a problem but a one pound puppy I just don't think could handle the cold. His parents are 3 and 4 pounds so he can't be that much bigger. Yeah we've been looking at the potty training stuff but it's all about crate training which I don't necessarily like. We do put him in the washer dryer room with the door closed and the potty pad when we do catch him go on the rug or anywhere else in the house but it's not a crate. |

| try limiting his area with an x-pen or play pen. put the pads on one side and his food and bed on the other. once he establishes which side is the "toilet" and reinforcing this with praise from you, he'll start to get the idea and you can start narrowing the toilet area and increasing his roaming area. |

I lived in Texas and I understand about the radical weather changes. I much preferred my dogs to be piddle pad trained. Not only the weather, but, hawks and and other wild animal life. Just never felt safe with letting them out.

Yeah, some people do fine not using crate training. The only reason crate training is usually more efficiant is because they usually won't go potty in their sleeping area so it prevents accidents from happening. There's a few great schedules you find online. I did the crating for the first month or so and then began just keeping him locked in our back area of the house with the TV and such and letting him outside every hour. I really feel like the crate training in those first weeks really helped him out a lot though. As for the size, yeah, he probably will be a tiny guy but I just wanted to let ya know sometimes it's not the case, lol. You never know with these little guys. Jackson's parents were 6 1/2 and 7 pounds. And he's almost 10 pounds at 5 months. lol

| yeah we just purchased a playpen for him today. now that we have i'm worried he'll ruin the mesh over time and escape. As for the size his parents' past litters always grew to be small. So I hope he didn't get a gene that lets him be bigger. I know he's young and it will take time but we're trying. We're also looking into obedience classes that help with potty training. We aren't rushing it but it's frusterating knowing we have 4 mats laid around the house and he still chooses the floor. But he's only a baby and you can't expect a baby to know where to go right away. thanks. |

| When I got Joey he was 6 mos old and weighed 2.8 lbs and he pottied outside with his older sister all through a pretty bad winter with lots of snow. A good warm, water-repellant jacket helped. He just never got the pee pad thing down and because Sadie already goes outside, he really didn't have much choice. It definitely gets easier in the warmer weather. Good luck, it took Sadie almost a year to be really housebroken and Joey is still working on it.

| My baby is 11 weeks old and has been using his pad since he was 8 weeks. I started out by putting him in a playpen with puppy pads in it every 30 mins. so he would get use to them. When he would go we would give him lots and lots of love tell him good boy make a big fuss about it. When he would go on the floor I would pick him up say no and put him in the play pen. Now I have a puppy pad on the floor in the kitchen and living room and he uses them He is about 99% puppy pad trained to poop and 100 % to pee. My little guy is a quick learner he sits and just today learned to shake it is to cute. Good Luck hope this helps. Congrats on your baby be ready to have your heart stolen. LOL Hugs,

YT 2000 Club Member | Jasmine is 11 weeks and is 1 lbs and 2 ounces, we brought her home at eight weeks. She goes outside to potty and stays in her crate at night. I take her out every two hours during the day. So far this method has worked out well for us. Good luck!
