Yeah, some people do fine not using crate training. The only reason crate training is usually more efficiant is because they usually won't go potty in their sleeping area so it prevents accidents from happening. There's a few great schedules you find online.

I did the crating for the first month or so and then began just keeping him locked in our back area of the house with the TV and such and letting him outside every hour. I really feel like the crate training in those first weeks really helped him out a lot though.

As for the size, yeah, he probably will be a tiny guy but I just wanted to let ya know sometimes it's not the case, lol. You never know with these little guys. Jackson's parents were 6 1/2 and 7 pounds. And he's almost 10 pounds at 5 months. lol
