While I was away... Alfie tore up my carpet to bits and pieces. My roommate texted me while I was at work and warned me. I'm conflicted because he has kennel cough (he's getting to the tail end of it I think, let's hope!). I heard dogs shouldn't be out taking walks, etc when they are like that. Any idea what to do so he's not tearing the place up while he's getting over this kennel cough? He has too much pent up energy. It's obvious! I sectioned off my room with his exercise pen, though he wasn't surrounded by the ex pen. I thought he was good and secure in his little area where he couldn't cause damage. He must have climbed onto his crate, onto my bed and hopped off to the other side. I can't see him climbing over the ex pen, but at this point I can't put it past him! I had to take pictures of the destruction. The last picture with the dog, is my roommate's dog. He's innocent, yet so curious! haha. The first picture is the guilty party in the background.

I had the same problem with my puppy she would tear appart the carpet when I was in the shower or not paying complete attention to her. I had to wait till she had all her shots to take her for walks so I just really tried to play with her and I put her in her kennel when I left. I bought her chew toys or my cousin used a Kong toy with a treat inside it would occupie the dog for hours.......best of luck I know its hard when there is not much you can do but try to tire him out

I love the other dog's expression in those pictures, it's all, "Daaaaaaaaang, somebody is gonna be in SO much trouble..." Barring that, I'm sorry about your carpet. I understand what you're going through because my friend's German Shepherd has severe separation anxiety and she came home to a similar sight...just...German Shepherd-sized destruction instead. Use your imagination.

Sorry about the destruction . Pic #2 is the best, the other dog is looking on like "Oh My who did that?" "You know it wasn't me"

| One of my pups would do that...drove me NUTS!!! I talked to my vet and he suggested sprinkling chili powder on the edges of the carpet. My pups would go over, sniff it lightly, then walk away from it. I thought it would hurt their little noses, but it didn't because they always take small sniffs when they find something new. It immediately stopped the carpet chewing and it does not stain the carpet, so you can vacumn it up after a day or two.

Thank you for the replies! I will use the chili powder recommendation. I got some Richard's Organics Pet Calm drops today to see if it works calming him down. His anxiety is awful. I did take him out for a bit today but didn't overdo it bc of the cough. He's doing tons better, but I don't want him to relapse if that's possible. I think I will keep him in the crate while I am gone for now. He misses his long walks and days at doggy daycare and at the dog park, but until I am positive he's 100% over this, he'll take it easy.

Let me know if the Calm Down works. My pup has a bit of separation anxiety as well and I'm considering using some of the calming formula. I know he yips and whines and howls a little when I leave, I just don't know how long - no note from the neighbors or call from the apartment complex yet, so I'm betting he hushes pretty quickly while I'm away...

We also have a few holes in our carpet....one of them happened while Emma was sitting right by my husband's feet while he was watching TV (obviously not paying attn to her...it had to have taken at least 20 mins to make this hole). Needless to say, they both got yelled at. LOL. I bought the Bitter Apple spray & sprayed it where she kept going back to. Of course, that'll only work on certain spots unless you want the entire carpet soaked with it. It worked for us though.... When Emma needs to let off some energy, we give her a new toy. She'll run & run & run & run...she's pooped when she gets done. She doesn't go outside too much.....so needless to say, she gets lots of new toys. Haha

I went to the vet shortly after I typed up the last response. The vet gave me some sedatives for the plane ride (we're leaving town for a week on Monday). He also gave me a prescription for his anxiety. He also recommended I get a behaviorist for him to go along with the anxiety meds. I will look into it. I know he needs more exercise. He hasn't sniffled or coughed once today, so I think I will take him out on a walk tomorrow. He will love getting back out there. Also, when I got there, I overheard a dog tested positive for parvo and another dog was rushed in after being hit by a car. I was waiting for the prescriptions and to pay, and the owner of the hit dog came out crying saying he lost her. He saw Alfie, smiled through his tears, and was like he reminds me of her with the terrier face (((. Omg tears started welling up in my eyes. I felt horrible for him. I don't even know how to say it correctly, but it makes my problems with Alfie destructing the place seem petty and ridiculous after what I saw tonight. I'm just thankful for my baby and love him so much.
