| Crating and she doesn't like it anymore? Since I've had Mahina she's been in her crate at night, she only cried the first two nights. She will even go into her crate by herself when she's tired. She never woke up in the middle of the night to go potty. I woke her up and she was sleepy and wouldn't really wanna do anything. So I stopped taking her out and I knew she'd bark if she needed out. Well, now she seems to whine when she goes in her crate, if I put her in there and lock the door. She'll whine for a few minutes and give up. I go to bed around 11 and then around 3-4am she'll bark, growl, whine and scratch. So I let her out and she doesn't go straight for the potty pad she tries to go to my bed! Not to pee, but to sleep! I continually put her on the pad and she'll go. She refuses to go back in her crate as she'll whine and bark and bark. So I never put her back in after that first incident because she's so loud and I of course just want to sleep. So she goes to my bed and will sleep with me until I wake up. Now, is this bad? If I want her to be crate trained should I just put her in there and deal with the barking at 3am when I just wanna go to sleep because I have school in the morning? I wake up two hours before I even have to leave(at 6 or 7 am depending on the day) so I could play with her, make sure she eats, get her nice and tired also. Should I just leave the crate door open and let her choose where to sleep? Or should I just let her sleep with me? One of my cats already sleeps with me at night. Am I just giving in and spoiling her? I'm so confused as to what to do. What do you do? She's 3.5 months old. |

| I think it's just personal preference..If you are happy with her sleeping with you then why not? My Pixie is crate trained and will get in hers by herself when she's tired..she's also in there when i'm out of the house for her own safety and at night I cover it with a blanket to make it cosy and I don't hear a peep out of her..I wouldn't mind her sleeping with me but she's a tiny and i'm afraid my hubby would lie on her or knock her off the bed!

| Pasquale was the EXACT same way. I swear your story sounds exactly what i went through. Guess where Pasquale sleeps now?LOL Yep! In our bed!! But you know what? I havent had to get up since he's been in our bed. He holds it the entire nite and in the morning i'm actually waking him up to go pee!

| This sounds exactly what my hubby and I are dealing with. All of my dogs would sleep through the night until my female was pregnant. She had to go out quite often a couple of weeks before delivering and therefore, Teddy would also want to go out. He got into the habit of getting up every couple of hours. Well the pups are gone but Teddy still wants out every two to three hours. Now if it were to go potty, trust me, I would continue to let him out but he wants out to play with my three cats who are now in the habit of coming to the door every two to three hours. So Sunday night was the first "tough love" night. As hard as it was, we let Teddy bark and he continued for 1/2 hour. He finally stopped, then a couple of hours later, he started barking again. We let him bark and he did so for about 10 minutes. The third time (6:00 a.m.) we let him out and then he went back to bed til about 9:00 a.m. Well, Monday night, he slept from 11:00 p.m. til 5:30 a.m., we let him out and then he went back to bed. We had to wake him up at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday night (last night) the first time he woke up was 5:00 a.m. and same thing, we let him out and then he went back to bed. This morning, we had to wake him at 9:30 a.m. So hopefully with two nights under our belt, we are on our way back to getting some sleep. Trust me, this tough love stuff is soooo much harder on us than it is on the four legged kids but it had to be done. We were so exhausted we had to do this. And sleeping with us was NOT at option as our 19 pound yorkie Lola sleeps with us and if Teddy did then Rosie would have had to and our bed is not big enough for three dogs. So if you just ignore your baby as hard as it is, they can be retrained to sleep in the crate which I believe is a great thing. So good luck, get out the ear plugs and just ignore her. |

| Sadie has been sleeping with me in bed since she was six months old. I just love having her there with me - and we both sleep a LOT better cuddled up together. When I get up in the night to go to the bathroom myself, I put her down and she runs to her pee pad and does her business and then it's back to bed we go. I think it's just a matter of personal preference.

Maybe I'll try the crate thing out, I think she just sees my cats at night in my room and wants out with them. Why must cats be nocturnal. Haha I'll see how it goes tonight with the crate. Good luck with your dog

I had Mahina sleep with me last night and I actually had a good night sleep! No waking up in the middle of the night and setting everything up for her. She seemed to sleep through the night. She did give me a scare because she's usally right by me when she sleeps but I woke up and she wasn't there! I checked the bed at the foot of my bed and there she was passed out. When I woke up in the morning she was right by me again. Silly girl. For some reason I feel safe having her right there with me. She barks when someone walks by my room as if she's trying to protect me.

| We crate trained Finnigan and he loved it. He did go throught stages here and there where he would want let out at night to sleep with us, but we just would only let him out to potty through the night if he barked/whined and put him right back. Now that he's older we've allowed him to sleep with us more and more, but he still will want his crate in the middle of the night. So, when he wakes up and starts wondering around the bed I'll put him in his crate.

| Hi! I have a 4 month old named, Strawberry. I have had the same experience. She has spent every night in her kennel since she came home a month ago and the first 3 nights she cried and cried and was very stubborn. But I made her stay in there. Then after that she started going into her kennel and napping and at night she would go in and settle in and sleep 3-4 hours, whimper to let me know she had to go outside....and I would put her back into her kennel when she was done and no problems. At around 7am she could come out, eat and then sleep with me a bit longer. She was good for about 2 weeks and even started holding her business longer and longer. I was thrilled!! However, the last week she has been testing me I think. She whines when I put her in, and I tell her to be quiet and she usually does, but every few hours she tries again with the whining. I know she can hold herself for 5-7 hours because she was doing that for weeks. It is driving me crazy! I am getting so tired. I have come very close to putting her kennel downstairs just so I can get some solid sleep. But then I would be worrying about her. Oy! Haha. I had a yorkie when I was a kid and she slept in a kennel. It worked for us until she was older and wanted to stretch out a bit more...so I let her sleep with me. She was about 12 when I let her. After that she only went into her kennel for a few hours every once and a while when we went out. She hated it after I let her sleep with me. I am toying with the idea of letting Strawberry sleep with me. The only reason I use the kennel is because I want her to like it in case once day we travel and she needs to be in it or if I travel and my parents babysit. They don't let dogs sleep with them or run free at night. I would hate for her to make a fuss when she is put in a kennel. Oh, and I have tried keeping her awake as late as I can so she will sleep better in her kennel at night, but I can't. She gets sleepy at 9 and I feel cruel trying to make her play. Haha...she won't do it anyway. She just ignores me and tried to sleep. So she sleeps until bedtime and then it is bedtime. That can't be helping matters. |
