As for the rest justify it any way you can but 10 hours is to long every day weeks on end without break.

I had not refreshed my screen when I made that reply so I didn't see any of your posts clarifying what tethering was, etc...Sorry for the confusion. Is it a full moon or something because us girls, including me, sure are extra sensitive today...wow

OP,

I just want to say that I'm glad you've decided to stick around...thought we might've lost you there in the beginning.

Your sense of humour about all of this is refreshing

edited...(oops, did anyone catch that?)

Same here...coffee wasn't too good this morning so I think that just ruined my entire day, LOL I'll admit I was pretty ticked off at the beginning of the post (way earlier this morning) just because people were making it out like I was the Hitler of all dog owners when all I'm doing is what is within my means right now. I just split from my husband, just moved on my own dime, paying for a divorce on my own dime...all of this stress is making me nuts! So naturally, when I do care enough to find help on how to make my dog's life easier...not mine...I became pretty defensive. I say from this point on....this is going to be a friendly, calm, not threatening thread...

LOL, at least your coffee wasn't this bad

Sounds like a really rough time in your life. Kudos for taking on what you needed to to make life better for you and your yorkie.

(for my part, I really did start out trying to help. Sorry that I got a little snippy somewhere in the middle)

OMG!!!! I don't think I laughed this hard today! As soon as I saw "bat in the coffee filter" that was it! You're right I seriously doubt my coffee was that bad...who knows...maybe bat flavored coffee is all the rage in some places...lmaoooooooooooo, unbelievable

I can certainly say I'm tryin'.... For the past 3 months I wasn't working...from the end of May to August. I was getting used to that and everything was great...except for the bad marriage part. So then, it was pretty much just me and Chewie. It kills me to have to leave him crated up like that all day. Trust me, if there was any other option right now, I'd take it. He seems to be adjusting though which is good.

I would recommend you pad train or litter box train your baby, since you are away that long each day. I pad trained my baby milu even though i stay home with her, because i don't want her to have to hold it at all, i want her to go to the bathroom whenever she wants to just as people do. Now she goes to the bathroom whenever she needs to. (she will go on the pad and poo about 2-4 times a day, and pee about 8 times a day)

I think that would be best for your baby as long as you make sure the area is safe for him to play and sleep for 10 hours while you are away.

Another possibility is to have someone come take your dog out for potty breaks during the day.

If you need advice with the pad training, let me know.
I agree that is to long of a time to expect them to hold it.

Hello Kim,

I am sorry you are going through such a rough time right now. I am sure the situation is really frustrating for you. I just want you to know that people here are just trying to help, even though i see how it might sound kind of bad from your perspective since you are already trying really hard. But people (we) don't know the whole story when reading your post, and since we are all yorkie lovers, we'll jump on anything that sounds like it's not good/healthy for yorkies because we care and want to make it better for these little babies, since they can't speak for themselves.

Speaking from experience, I own three bunnies as well as my baby milu. I knew SOOOOO little about bunnies before, and made so many mistakes. It wasn't because i was trying to be mean to the bunnies, it was because i didn't know i was doing the wrong things for them.

Anyways, what i am trying to say is that people are not saying that you are a bad mom. (not at all) they are just commenting what they read in your post and trying to help better the current situation.

And I actually have another suggestion for you that might possibly work, I will type it up later. (sorry, I don't have time atm)

As for your original question. to leave water or not to leave water? I would definitely leave water for chewie.

I got a coffee today but I also got a back handed offer of a 6 week old brain damaged deaf dog that a BYB breeder does not want to deal with.
Want to see a dog trainer hit the roof in two seconds and forget to edit the bad words.. been a tough old day and I just needed computor time and I mess up.
I can not cuddle my dog as it will sense I mad and upset and think it in trouble and it get upset it vcan get ugly.
I Got a headach and I am cranky.

Keep caring ok.. your going to get nailed once and a while and let me tell you I get nailed lots cause I think outside the box a lot.
You have to ask to learn and your going to get an honest answer and you may not like it and have to adjust or not but we been around a few more blocks or at least I am older then you and lot and have worked with dog a while and one with aggresion or two or three and well I see where things go cause I done some not so smart things when I was a learning and I wish I could go back.
So sometimes we like to try and save others going down the path our mess up took us. I learned the hard way and a tiny little dog paid a big price and lives with it.
What I have had to give up for this one is well a ton and it is cause I love it and you love yours and we do as best as we can.

JL

Default another suggestion

hello kim,

something you might consider is to get an expen or a gate that chewie cannot climb out of. (someone suggested play yard for children, you can check that out) and since you said that you are not having any luck with the pee-pad, one thing you can try is making a little potty box for him.

I made this for milu when I first started potty training her. Basically you buy a plastic container, soil, and sod. drill holes at the bottom of the plastic container and place the top at the bottom of the container so water doesn't get through. put soil in the container, then put sod on top of it. Milu knew what the little box of grass was for right away, and would go potty there whenever she needed to.

You might want to have a few different boxes so you can switch them and rotate using them so it doesn't get too gross. But i would definitely make just one first and see if it works out for chewie.

Hopefully i am explaining this ok and not making it too confusing? let me know if you would like to give it a try or if you have any questions.

(i stopped using these grass boxes because pee pads are a lot easier to deal with)

GOOD LUCK!

Hi,
I'm new to this and thought I'd let you know how I manage with my guy. He's 2 and a rescue so I don't know much about his training. I've had him for 3 months and I had no idea what I was going to do when I had to go to work.
Luckily he's not a chewer but potty retraining was tough. I have a 10 hour day as well. I have a hallway that I use as his area. I put a big blue tarp down
and let it curl up the walls a bit. He has his bed, toys, blankets, pillow, water and a little food. I got the soft mesh gates that he can't climb up. After a few weeks I let him have access to my very small bathroom. He rarely does his business in there especially since I took the bath rugs out. He sleeps with me at night and twice now he has gotten up in the middle of the night and gone out to pee on the tarp. The move may have him a little stressed. I hope it works out for you whatever you decide to do.

Don't know if this will help, but my daughter uses a gate to keep her yorkie in the kitchen of her apartment. He has his food and water, toys, blanket and his open crate to sleep in . She has been using potty pads but now is trying to switch to a litter box. She just has to not put in to thick a layer of litter or he starts digiing. Also she started by putting the potty pad in half of the litter box so he is getting the idea. Her last apartment she had a large bathroom so she used a real sturdy baby gate to contain him during the day. I know this has worked our really well for her and she doesn't feel soooooooo guilty if she is caught in traffic or has to work an extra hour. She also leaves animal planet on tv so he can watch while she is away. Hope this helps!
