Don't know if this will help, but my daughter uses a gate to keep her yorkie in the kitchen of her apartment. He has his food and water, toys, blanket and his open crate to sleep in . She has been using potty pads but now is trying to switch to a litter box. She just has to not put in to thick a layer of litter or he starts digiing. Also she started by putting the potty pad in half of the litter box so he is getting the idea. Her last apartment she had a large bathroom so she used a real sturdy baby gate to contain him during the day. I know this has worked our really well for her and she doesn't feel soooooooo guilty if she is caught in traffic or has to work an extra hour. She also leaves animal planet on tv so he can watch while she is away. Hope this helps!
