| Not neutered, 10.5 months old...MARKING! Hey all, it's been MONTHS since I've last been here. I have a situation: Pikko is about 10 and a half months old and he hadn't been neutered because, frankly, he only has one ball right now...! I was told by a vet assistant to wait until he is 10 months old to see if nature will take its natural course and maybe his other ball will drop. Well, it hasn't. In the meantime, I've been dealing with Pikko's marking issues. I try to catch him in the act, but when I'm not home, I can't control when or where he marks. Of course, I clean the places he marks thoroughly, but of course, he will try to mark again because it's all instinctual. I've made an appointment to get Pikko neutered on August 28, failing that his other ball didn't drop - so now there has to be a partial surgery (meaning more costs for me, oh well). So here is where my questions arise: After he gets neutered, will he stop marking and go back to when he was properly potty trained (like, squat and pee in a puddle vs. marking)? And if neutering doesn't help AS MUCH, what are the other solutions you can suggest to getting him properly trained again (being that I'm not always around to catch him in the "act")? |

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | Unfortunately once they start marking they normally continue to mark. Neutering normally won't help. It doesn't matter it you call it testicles, balls, testes, it refers to the same thing and they are what the vet removes. It it has not decended they need to search for it with surgery. I think I missed the thread that says you must be political correct when posting??

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | I think it can be done but training them to not mark is really difficult and I depend on belly bands when I really want to prevent marking.

| I must say I got lucky with Timmy. He was neutered after he was a year old and he use to mark. He had to have belly bands on when he had free run if the house. As soon as he got fixed he stopped marking and hiking his leg in the house. No more marking and he even squats! He's happy now that he doesn't have to wear the belly band and so am I. If you do not plan on breeding him I would get him neutered. Its not guarantee but he will be healthier. |

| Been there, done that. My male Bichon, Cosmo, had one testicle that didn't drop. A vet in Florida told my son to wait to have him neutered, which my son did. My vet in Tennessee said if a testicle hasn't come down by four or five months of age, it probably isn't going to drop, and you should go ahead and neuter the dog. Cosmo was neutered when he was a year old when he came to live with me. The testicle was easy to find and the vet didn't have any problems with the surgery. Cosmo had leaned to mark and although it got better after he was neutered, he didn't completely stop. I still have to watch him today since he will mark anything new or something he particularly likes and wants to claim. Once learned, marking is a very hard habit to break. I would recommend getting him neutered as soon as possible for his health and maybe the marking will get better. |

| My boys are both neutered and they both mark. They are potty pad and outside trained. To help with the hiking problem, I lay a small washable potty pad up against their favorite spots. For some reason they like 2 doorways in my house. Sometimes they don't do it at all and sometimes more. I've heard it is definately behavioral. I have belly bands for when we go to other peoples houses. Good Luck. I'm just glad I have wood floors!!

| I have had three male dogs over many years and not one has ever marked inside my home. What makes them mark in a house if there are no other dog's around? |

| I had one neutered at 15 months old and his marking was baaddd, his little shooter was fully loaded at all times......after neutering he was so much better. I also had another one done at 10 months old and he was drastically reduced in his marking.....Good luck with your little guy.....

| I'm convinced Otis learned it from my best friend's dog Buster. They spent a lot of time together from the day I brought Otie home. And Otis being the good big brother he is, taught Oliver to hike when he came in the picture. I've done extensive online research to try to get tips on how to retrain or have them unlearn the behavior but I haven't been successful. If anyone has idea's, I'm sure there are lots of us that would be grateful!

| The first time Buddy marked was when my sister came to visit, LOL. He must have smelled her dog on her.
