| Potty Question - I guess ?? I just got our Yorkie on Friday evening--she is almost 4 years old. Anyways, we rescued from what we believe was a puppy mill and she was only basically used for breeding and such. Anyways, she is soo adapting and know that she has a great family and love now... What Im wondering about is her potty-training. I've been taking her out every 4-5 hours or so and she's been doing really good and has only had 1 accident out of the times we've had her. She does her business outside like she's suppose to and all... but she doesn't let me *know* she has to go out. Only does it when I take her out. The *breeder* told me she was never really trained but always used the paper area they had, and went out the doggie door they had for their fenced in area. Now, she knows she is suppose to potty outside like I said, and we reward and praise her lots like she's suppose to get, so that's not a problem! I just don't know how to get her to try to tell me she has to go out.. maybe Im just being inpatient though, its only been 3 days!

| Memphis never really has told me when he needs to go out either. But lately i have been really using the word potty or outside and he is starting to respond to it. Maybe if you keep using the same words she will eventually have some reaction and start letting you know. Good luck |

| How old is your Memphis? I use the words "Potty" and "go outside" right before and her little ears perk up and all so I guess she knows. But I guess Im also use to miss Daphne's ways too--she lets us know by going to the door or prancing around. lol

| I have never done this but a lot of peoplehave luck training their dog to ringa bell when they need to go out. You hang a bell they can reach on the door knob or somewhere near the door where you take the dog out to go potty and you use their paw to ring the bell every time you take her out. Eventully she will learn to ring the bell. Good luck! |

| I'm too lazy for the bell, I teach them to scratch the door. Tinkerbell does this if I am in the kitchen where the back door is. Other wise I have noticed (just recently) that she actually comes and finds me and bugs me when she has to go potty. If I don't realize she is doing this to go potty, she will go off and find somewhere to potty. It was really subtle at first and now it is a very obvious, I gotta go potty sign. Give her a while to adjust to her new home and to you and then try working on a signal, she may come up with one all on her own if you give both of you a little time to get to know eachother. |

| After about two weeks our little guy started going over and sitting next to the door when he needs to potty. Always take her out the same door so they know it's the potty door. YOu don't have to train them really at all. They'll start to go to that door when they need to go you just need to be where you can see them sitting there. Our little guy won't sit there long before going to find another spot. But he does try to tell us he has to go out and if we're not paying attention it's our own fault. No accidents in the last couple days and we've only been at it for a month.

| Well I am still a work in progress with my yorkie babies almost 5m and 4m, but the past few days I have notice they go and sit by the back door and just look at me like gotta go. But I also have pup pads in the kitchen and master bath just incase I am busy and dont notice them sitting waiting to go out Princess rarely ever uses the pads she will go out side or on the floor she is 5m and Koda is pretty good about both he will pee and poo outside but if not he always does it on the pad. But my Brownie a 2y old chihuahua mix she is so cute when she has to go out she will come and look at me and tap her feet to get my attention and all I have to say is you gotta go outside or you need to potty and it is on she starts dancing and doing circles and barking she never has a accident but the other day it rained all day and for the first time ever she peeed on the pad I was shocked she almost completly filled the whole pad. (she will not pee in wet grass will hold it forever before doing so.) But in time I am sure your new little girl will have her own way of telling you things like when she needs to go just takes a little bit of adjusting on her and you to get to know each other. good luck she is very beautiful and lucky to have you as her forever mommy to love and spoil her...
