| My 9 month old pees/poops on floor when he is mad! I've been having problems with my 9 month old Yorkie (Sir Lancelot) getting him to be consistent on the wee wee pad. He came to us trained at 4 months, so 5 months of this inconsistency has been VERY frustrating. Then last week, i realized the pattern... if I can't play with him or give him attention (I work from home) or I run out to do errands... that is when he pees/poops on the floor or carpet! If he is happy and getting lots of attention from me, he goes on the pad every time! Unfortunately I can't always interrupt my work and housework to play with him, and cleaning up pee while I'm on a conference call sucks!!! I don't know what to do I've started putting him in the bathroom (with his wee wee pad, crate, toys and food/water) everytime he makes a mistake until he goes again on the wee wee pad. But I feel terrible because I dont' know if he knows why he is in there, and this is dragging on and on. any ideas? Thanks!!! |

| HOw much free run are you giving the puppy when you can't watch it? The more room they have the more chances you will find accidents. Try confining the puppy to a room with a solid floor, with a pee pad in it or a crate when you can not watch it. Remember a puppy is still a baby. Another thing you might want to try is after you play with the puppy make sure they go to the bathroom right a way, all that excitement makes them have to go. Milo was a year old before I let him in a room where I could not see his every move and even now at 2 1/2 he must be on the same floor as me, if I am downstairs he is downstairs, if I am up he is up. |

| I live in a small apartment, so there are only a few small rooms. That being said, watching him doesn't really do any good b/c he only messes up when I'm not paying attention to him. I'm fortunate enough to work from home, but I can't play with him all day long and i do run out on an errand from time to time, and thats when he strikes! I've read elsewhere on this forum that most Yorkies are dog trained by 9 months, and the Dog Whisperer says that dogs are adolescents at 9 months... so I think Sir Lancelot knows what he is doing. I just don't know the best way to teach him that he can't have his way!!! |

| He just knows you aren't paying attention to him and he doesn't have to follow the rules. Dogs don't do things to "get revenge" like that. He might pee when he's stressed or excited, but he's not doing it to get back at you. If he does it when you ignore him you can't catch him in the act and put him in the right spot. You need to confine him when you can't watch him. He's not ready for freedom!

| He is not doing it when he is mad. He probably is just used to having you around and when he feels anxious or stressed out, he may have an accident. Putting him in the bathroom till he uses the pee pad won't help. If you can, use an xpen.

| To the OP, I think you are right. He knows what he is doing. I'm sure part of it is, he knows hes going to get some form of attention if he pees/poops on the floor when you are working. You stop your work, and go over there to clean it up seeing him in the process I'm sure. Dogs are very smart animals and will quickly train you. I would keep him in a crate/room where he can't see you when your working for a few weeks/month. Take back charge and see if that helps. Just an idea. And good luck!!
