To the OP, I think you are right. He knows what he is doing. I'm sure part of it is, he knows hes going to get some form of attention if he pees/poops on the floor when you are working. You stop your work, and go over there to clean it up seeing him in the process I'm sure. Dogs are very smart animals and will quickly train you.
I would keep him in a crate/room where he can't see you when your working for a few weeks/month. Take back charge and see if that helps. Just an idea.
