| Potty Outside I'm trying to get my puppy to go outside to use the bathroom. We tried the pads and he just was not getting it at all. I'm not sure how long I should let him stay out and try to go because the weather is very cold. It is in the 20's and 30's. He gets to shivering. I try to take him every couple hours if he wont go I take him more often. I put him in a doggie pen if he don't go and I do have a little heater fan I let him lay next to to warm up. Will the cold weather hurt him? I'm trying so hard to get him trained but it is not easy. He is a very hard headed pup. Anyone with any advice I would appreciate it. |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk! Have you tried putting some warm clothing on him before you take him out, some pjs or a dog coat? That may help. It sounds pretty cold, though. I wouldn't keep him out too long. You may have to make several tries and let him warm up inside between times. I find it is just easier to use a potty pad, escpecially in bad weather or with tiny puppies. They do eventually learn how to use both at my house, a doggie door to an outside potty pen and inside washable potty pads. Hope this helps.

| Hi Welcome, I have a fairly new puppy also. I live in Ohio so I understand about the weather. When I got pixie at 3.5 months (December 1st) the weather was an issue but I am a believer that dogs do their business outside. This worked for me – every 1-2 hours take the dog outside on a leash for a few minutes, when she went to the bathroom I would say “Go Potty” and give her a special treat/praise. And she could have free time in the house. If she didn’t go I put her back in her crate (were it was warm) and tried again about 30 minutes later. It worked like a charm. I do have a little coat for Pixie but I believe it’s for my benefit not hers. At this point, when it’s really cold she runs out, goes to the bathroom and runs right back in – less than 30 seconds. If it’s not so cold, we go for a short walk. Looking forward to spring! This was a lot of work but I’ve had Pixie about 2.5 months and she goes outside faithfully. For night time, I did not give water after 8pm and last outside trip was about 10:30 and she was able to hold it through the night after about a week. I am not an expert so I am unsure about the small 1.5lb yorkies. But Pixie is about 5lbs and much more robust than I ever thought Yorkies were. I hope this helps, the people on this forum really helped me housetrain my puppy. Good Luck and be patient, it works! |

YT 2000 Club Member | I pretty much did the same as candacekimble when we got Jeter the last weekend of November. He was just a bit over 1 pound when we brought him home and he did great potting outside. I put a sock sweater on him that I had to make because the jackets were too big on him. He is now almost 5 months old and he is almost 2 pounds and fully potty trained! He lets us know he has to go out. When it's too cold, he goes out and in real fast, no playing around. On nice day's we take a stroll down block. By the way welcome to YT and I love your name, I am a Brandy too! what is your puppies name? Good luck with your puppy!

| Thank you guys for your advice. I really do appreciate it. I'm trying to find him a coat but I have not found one small enough for him yet. I have a sweater for him but it is still kinda big and he will pee on it if he wears it outside right now because it's still to big on him. His name is Kobe by the way. |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Cute name! If you don't have anything else..you can always make him a sock sweater. Cut off the heel and toe...cut two arm holes...instant sweater. Then it's up to you....take him out, take him out, take him out...repeat 3072 times go potty. Do not let him to have free rein of your house unsupervised. Something else I did...we took ours out the same door every time. Eventually mine went to that door to let us know they needed to go outside. Good luck!
