| I knew this was going to be tough... Okay well the 5 month old Tucker is giving hubby and I a headache. I'm assuming that since the previous owner was always sick from chemo that Tuck was often in his crate. Well he won't relieve himself anywhere but the crate! We can sit with him on the potty pad anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour and it never fails that as soon he's back in the crate he goes. It's like he's been trained to only go in there. I finally stopped putting towels in there because I'd washed them so much. He doesn't seem concerned to tell us before he does it, he just does it and then whines, whines, whines and shakes his crate by banging his body up against the sides of it trying to get out! Any help would be greatly appreciated. He's also having a few aggression problems. Growling when our Golden gets near him, growling when either other dog gets near his food, toys, etc. a lot of teeth baring, growling and barking... HELP!!! |

Oh My God, I sympathize with you. I had been dealing with this very thing. Luckily the dog stopped pooing in his crate. maybe you might want to remove him from the crate and see if he cries to go in there to do it, when he does tell him NO NO NO and take him outside. Or if he does it in the crate take the poop and put it outside and take him to that spot. That is exactly what I did to get this one Bijou to stop the pooing in the crate. But the new puppy is learning, he has not done this anymore in his crate. I will remove all paper, bedding etc from the crate and make sure the crate is SMALL not big and only the size for him to stan, lay and turn around in. If his crate is bigger and he has room he will do it in there. And the more he does it the more he will want to do it. But if the room he has is so limited he may want to change him mind. This is a hard thing to deal with I tell you.

| Put a pad in his crate, then after a couple of days completly take away his crate and leave the pad where the crate is. When Bella was a puppy her crate was big enough for her to sleep, and a place for her to potty. Well she ended up thinking the crate was her potty! So finally we removed the crate completly and only put a pad in it's place. Now she still goes to that exact same spot everytime on the pad, well, even if theres no pad there she still goes to that spot!!!

| Crating is an effective method! Umm... I do not wish to be impolite, but crate training is a very effective method of potty training and dogs are naturally den creatures so they don't mind. They make it their home. It isn't a cage, it's a safe, warm place where they can have peace and quiet. I am interested how you trained your dog if you did not use this method. I am a working pet owner so I feel much safer knowing that when I can't be there to take care of them they are safely in their crates, and not chewing on wires, or anything else that could hurt them. For one last time, crating is NOT cruel. |

| well!! I have seen ppl on the internet that use the crate as a potty area because they did not want the pup to sleep in there. since he is already trained to use the crate you could keep it as a potty area and get him a pet bed to sleep in.I don't see it being a problem since it is in a contained area. JMHO! good luck what ever you decide

We started crating our bischon and I had her potty trained in days. She is now 7 yrs old and LOVES her kennel/crate. Now we put her in while we are gone to work/school or away from the house...but she often lays in there other times too. I would not put a puppy in a crate all day - they're simply too young to be able to hold it all day...that WOULD be mean. But as soon as our Mariah is old enough we will begin to crate her too. We have her crate in her room (my bathroom) and she often lays/sleeps in there so she is getting used to it already. If I could choose - I would love to stay home all day with my Angel and Mariah...but we have to leave to go to school/work. We can't spend 24/7 with them and while we are away from them I love knowing they are safe!

| First of all I see several newbies on this thread and I want to welcome all of you. Good luck with all your new babies. And to the OP...is that Emporia, Kansas you are from? I lived there years ago when hubby was in school.
