Leash Training I've searched the forums and just couldn't find what I was looking for so here goes... today, I attempted to walk Charlie on a leash and it did not go so well. He was very jumpy, would not follow me or anything He just wanted to run! He's not really trained to the command "come" so i dont know if I need to wait, but whats the best way to get your dog to follow you on a leash?! Also, he hates his harness...maybe I have a crappy one, but he fights and bites to keep it off of him. I'm really discouraged, but I know after one day he's not going to learn it all! Please help i need advice

You don't want to use a leash, you want to use a harness vest..this way, if you have to pick him up in a hurry or have to jerk on them, it's not going to hurt them..Yorkies have small tracheas, and you sure don't need a collapsed trachea...get a harness vest and start working by taking him out..they should never pull, they should always walk on your left side..We had to go through all of that with the obedience trainer with the 2 outside dogs..it took awhile, but, they finally got it...

Training to walk politely on a leash takes time. It is good to hear that you are using a harness rather than a collar. Before you decide to go for a walk, get Charlie accustomed to the harness. Start by putting it on Charlie several times a day for short periods of time. If he doesn't adjust to that type of harness, then you might want to switch to another type. There are a lot of different types - harness vests - buddy belts, step-in harnesses - all are good and in most cases safe for walking. YT has many very talented seamstresses/vendors who can help you with the perfect harness/leash for Charlie. Once Charlie is accustomed to the harness and will wear it without complaint, then hook the leash on to the "d" ring and let him drag it around the house (under constatnt supervision to avoid injury) Once Charlie is completely comfortable with the harness and leash, then try walking him inside. When you can control him inside, then start going for short walks. I know it sounds like a long drawn out process, but I guarantee you will get quicker results by going slow than by fast.

I am also having problems with my yorkie with leash training. I'm using a retractable leash and have a hardwood floor so if i let him walk around with the leash on it might scratch the floor and be too heavy for him to pull. It is too cold and snowy outside right now so i can't take him for a walk anyways. At home he would normally just sit there and stare at me the moment i put it on but when i took him to petsmart he happened to walk fine (except for when he saw other huge dogs past him he would use me as a shield and lay on my feet .) Should i be worried about his behaviour and keep training in the house? and if i should how should i go about it?

I bought a Puppia Vest for Duke, i put it on him with the leash about 3x a day and walk in our hallway (we live in an apartment building in NYC). It's been almost 2weeks and he still doesn't want to stay still for the vest, but he knows that once i put both on him, we can go out....so i guess it'll take time. i really like the puppia vest i got.
