| Have I done something wrong? Okay, Brady will be four months old in on the 23rd of January. He's a great joy to have and we think his training is on track. He will use the pee pad once during the day during a duration that my husband is away for an extended period and the rest of the time will go outside. Using treats and a lot of tummy rubs he has learned to come, sit, and lay (we're working on stay ). Now in the last week when we call Brady to come he will come but only to a certain point. He won't come right up to us so he can receive a rub under the chin or a treat. When we move closer to him to pick him up he will step back or run to his bed. He sits in our lap, cuddles next to us in bed at night and we play on the floor with him every day. We haven't done anything to scare him, we would never hit him or yelled at him and we are baffled. Is this something we have done wrong while training, do you think he's really scared, or is this a game? Anyone else have a yorkies that has done this? |

| He is trying to change the rules of the game :-) You need to do 2 things: 1. ignore him when he runs away 2. use a better treat!!!

What worked for us when we need him to come all the way is: kneel on the floor, say come & point to a spot on the floor that you want him to come to, if he only come half way, say come here & point at the spot on the floor where you want him to be. When he hits this spot treat & praise.

| Yeah Yorkies are smart! Loki did what Logan did too. I was sick of chasing him so I just taught him "crate" and now I can say it from anywhere in the house he will BOLT to his crate and sit and wait for his treat there. You do have to outsmart them and it's not easy! Smiggy it sounds like you have a smart one. My Loki is super smart. Sammy is slow but sweet and generally well behaved so it's OK that she took months to learn sit. Loki knows hundreds of words and even sentences. It's good to focus that We did tons of classes.

Logan also does better when we speak in full sentence rather then commands. He knows Logan are you ready for bed & he runs & jumps on our bed, my hubby gives him his nighttime treat, picks him up, gives him to me for my goodnight kiss & then off to his bed. If we alter the routine he gets upset. He doesn't really know stay, but he does know stay in the house. Sometimes I swear he's a person & one word commands are beneath him or something.

| We have never used a crate for Brady. We tried it the first couple of nights and ended up with him sleeping on our bed. Some probably cringe at that but he's quiet and only whines once in the early AM to go out then he goes right back to bed. We tried to get him use to a crate but even when we tried to sit in the room with him and put him in there for short periods of time you would think that we was dying. We are still trying to work on having Brady feel comfortable in a crate but it's at random times so I don't think he associates the come command with crating. He is extremely smart. He has already learned to ring a bell to go outside (something our six year old Aussie still can't grasp) and Brady recognizes words when we tell him to go fetch his ball, bear or leash. He rarely comes back without the correct item. I will have to give him is favorite little treats only when I tell him to come and his approaches all the way. |

It's not "Loki, crate" It's "Loki take your stick upstairs and go chew it in your crate" and it's like he looks at me and thinks "OK MOM!" and runs up there with his stick. If he's had enough grooming for one sitting he will get antsy and if I tell him "almost done" he is good for like 2 more minutes and then holds me to it!! If I stay home from work he just sits and stares at me like "why are you here?" which he does NOT do on the weekends. He gets quite annoyed with anything that's not our regular schedule.

| It's interesting that you both mentioned that your yorkies respond to sentences. Our Aussie, Sukie, is intelligent but definately likes one or two word commands. I have noticed that Brady will just look me in the eyes as if to say "please finish" and won't bolt to get fetch an item. Sometimes I wonder if he's trying to figure out what I want from him or just waiting for complete instructions. haha |

| Sounds like he is doing pretty good for 4mos old. However these little ones like to change and do the training for us. They like to mold us in there habits and not have us in charge. So keep trying and he will get it. He has done alot with you already.

I had a couple of people at work comments that yorkies or small dogs were "dumb" when I told them that we were just brought a yorkie into our family. The longer we have Brady and the more I read here I realize how wrong they are! | |

Funny story, we just recently got Logan a crown shaped toy that squeaks, my hubby was teasing him & calling him Burger King. now if we want him to fetch it we have to say go get your crown, Burger King. If we just say go get your crown he looks at us like we're nuts, it has to be the full phrase & then he takes off.

| Punkin will come to me when called but when DH husband calls her she comes close and then takes off. It makes him sooo frustrated. I laugh and remind him that its his fault, he likes to chase her around the house as a game and she just wants him to chase her - lol. We are trying to figure out the words and phrases Punkin knows and there seems to be so many. I swear she understands everything we say to her. |
