| I don't know if I can help or not, but our one little boy gets distracted when he goes out to potty. Squirrels, birds or whatever. So I have to remind him to go potty. And then he's like, (Oh!) good thinking mom. Because he has come in on occasion and pottied. It is funny and it's hard to scold. I guess for him to much to do out there. |

| So Easily Distracted I have read on other posts or in training books, that repeating your chosen phrase to pee/poop when going out and finding a spot and also during the process itself. Those little minds are so easily distracted...just a neighbor opening a door changes Johnny's plans. If the leaves are blowing, another distraction. Now, with the snow on the ground, another distraction has taken precedence over pee/poop so there have been several accidents lately. I haven't been putting his coat on with the hopes that he will want to get back inside quickly but he just wants to run around, eat the snow, and forget about pee/poop. Can dogs have ADHD?

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | i used to take mine out on a leash and tell her to 'go potty'. this way she can't get too far away to get distracted. I would also stay out there in all kinds of weather until she went potty. then we went back inside for play time and treats.

| Yes, the long, retractable leash worked for me. Potty training has to be supervised. I have a whole new winter wardrobe as a result of winter potty training. If my pup did not perform when I took him out, his feet never touched the floor until it was time to try again in 1/2 hour or so. He was placed in his crate or carried until he was "dressed" for outdoors again. I never played with him outside until after he did his business. Hope this was a little helpful. |

| I've Been Doing That Too Glad to hear crating the pup when he doesn't go outside and then trying again in 1/2 hour is a good plan as I have been doing that. Sometimes, it has to be done two or three times but it does eventually work. Yes, my winter wardrobe has increased too!

| I would tell mine "potty for a treat".. and when she pottied, I'd give her a treat. Someone here suggested me giving her pieces of her own food for a treat. So I always kept a pocket full of her food on me. It worked too! She'd sometimes fake a pee to get a treat Just having one 2 weeks, is certainly not enough time in traning. I also got a large bell from petsmart, and hung it on the back door. I put peanut butter on it, to get her used to ringing the bell to go outside. Many here have bell trained dogs. I learned all this from other YT members. You have to use the same exact words each time to get them to do what you want. I used "potty for a treat" and "wanna go out, have to ring the bell" then I'd ring the bell and we'd go out. It took her about 2 months to finally ring it, but she does it now. |

| The long retractable leash works great for me too, I used to take Bentley out without that and he used to run all around and not concentrate on going at all, but now on the leash I just say go pee and he goes and poo too, it works wonders. |

| I have a little problem with my baby too. When we got her she was 4 months old. Lady that we bought her from told us that Bebe is already potty trained. But I don't think she told us the truth. Bebe will "go" anywhere in the house, she peed all over the carpet, tiles and wood floors! We can not get enogh cleaning solutions! I would be taking her outside every 30 min. or so, but after coming inside she would pee on the floor. Finally we put down a doggy dor - what a relief! Now she is going outside to the backyard and doing her business there. I can watch her through the living room window. She is like a big girl running around the yard, playing with our cats. She is still pee/poo in the house though Not as much as she use to of course, but it happens. I do not know what to do anymore - my husband is very upset because of it. I still take her outside sometimes after she'll wake up from her nap, but I can be too late at times. Pls help!!! Will she ever stop pee/poo in the house? P.S. She is not staying in the crate, she is sleeping with us in bed. Thank you! |
