Yes, the long, retractable leash worked for me. Potty training has to be supervised. I have a whole new winter wardrobe as a result of winter potty training.
If my pup did not perform when I took him out, his feet never touched the floor until it was time to try again in 1/2 hour or so. He was placed in his crate or carried until he was "dressed" for outdoors again. I never played with him outside until after he did his business.
